Why is that better than letting them leave early to get home in time? Inviting them to stay and watch it at school is great, but what makes people think that's better than letting them out early? What is the big deal about this? Seriously?

Not all kids at secondary school can go home early. Some still need to be supervised. Some have to wait for a certain bus/train/sibling/other. Giving the option to leave early is one thing, enforcing an early finish is quite another.

My 9 year old daughters english homework this weekend was to write a letter to the head teacher using what they've been learning in class to try and persuade him to do just this, let them home early to watch the match. We're not even a football watching household but she put a lot of effort into her letter so from that point of view I'm quite happy as she's 'earnt' her hour off and is being taught the power of the pen.

I do wonder what some of the other parents are supposed to do though as this is a junior school so ages 7-11.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I was teaching at a primary school during the 2002 world cup in Korea.

The matches were at 7am or something ridiculous.

I remember getting to school at 6.30am and setting up the data projector and the screen as we invited the kids in to watch it together.

I also remember telling the head I thought it was crazy, and she said it was better to do that than give out 25% late marks that day.

About 10% of the kids got late marks as those who didn't watch at school came in about 10am after the game.

If you love/hate football, you have to accept it is a big deal for a lot of people to watch England play. If the school didn't officially let the kids out, they'd be bunking off anyway with notes from their parents. And those who were forced to stay in school wouldn't be concentrating.

I don't get it myself as I'm not that into football, World Cup or not, but can understand that a heck of a lot of people do and once every 4 years it's going to be very distracting to a lot of people.

id prefere my children to know they take time off school / work only when they desperatly need to as its important to know not just to have an hour off to watch a football event, music event , social event , all which are hobbys really ,
hobbys should be in spare time not during school time

Maybe she's getting 'uptight' because you weren't 'pointing out facts'. You were calling her a misery guts and telling her to spend time with her children.

I don't share with the OP's concerns about this, but I certainly don't think she deserves to be spoken to like that.
