The whiring sound is probalby the HDD spinning up (will do that even if it just gets power & no signal from the motherboard)

You say that there is no beeping, does the mobo have a on board speaker or a wired 1? it could be that but tbh it sounds like he killed the MOBO with static.

scottishf.....might be a girlie but know about monitor connections ;) tried it with another monitor and it's doing exactly the same thing

s0litaire, I've tried all the plugs, can't see anything loose after I've pushed all the ones I can see back in

A no signal error on the monitor means that no signal is going from the graphics card to the monitor...try reseating the graphics card, and check the cables.

Normally a plastic or metal 'latch' at each end of the memory socket which line up with cut-outs in the stick. Some pooters can be a bit tricky when inserting RAM - could be it's not pushed in far enough?

If it isn't - BE CAREFUL when easing it in, ideally get some support under the memory socket.

and for the next time(if you stay together after this), point him towards CPU-Z.

Get a pencil or pen eraser, take the RAM module out, clean the golden contacts with the eraser and then re-seat the RAM module.

That's the beep code..usually means RAM error, but you will have to check the documentation. Try reseating it again.

It's not a new computer.....in fact it's only running XP.....but the hardware inside is much much better than the one we had.

Will try re-seating.....is it safe to rub the contacts with an eraser??
