Aaahh, so we are actually all in agreement. A top up to a total of 1GB RAM is the recommendation.

OK, so you're all suggesting that we upgrade to 1gb RAM? Do I just get a 1gb RAM stick? I'm not sure if the other slot next to where the RAM is currently plugged into it the right one for RAM....it's pink where the other slot is green *confused*Sealed Pot Challenge Member 1216 -

- do as Donnie said use CPUz to find the Memory & Motherboard type
- unless my old eyes fail me no one in the thread knows what the MOBO is ?
- so one whole stick or two half sticks depends on the MOBO !
- as ' withabix ' says wriststraps are rubbish / built thousands never worn one / never killed one !
- use CPUz and tell this thread what MOBO is inside.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. If it was the wrong one it wouldn't fit, or you'd break it making it fit.
There are a few reasons slots will be different colours.
Some motherboards accept more than one type of ram, so they colour code them to make sure you know which is which. DDR and DDR2 usually, and don't try to mix them. You'll kill it.
Some are purely to differentiate between slot 1 and slot 2.
With some, you can run them in dual channel mode, to make the ram a little faster. You'll usually get 4 slots, 1,2,3 and 4. To run it in dual channel you'd have a stick in slot 1 and slot 3. One in slot 1 and one in slot 2 would run it in single channel mode. A little slower.
If you have 512MB right now, another 1GB (£15-ish) would help things along very nicely. another 512MB (£10-ish) would definitely make a noticeable difference, but the cost difference is only a fiver so I'd go for another 1GB.They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -

Please quote where the OP said anything other than it being DDR2, instead of just posting confrontational nonsense.
I posted general prices for a 512MB and a 1GB stick of DDR2 ram. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
The motherboard make/model is needed to be certain but cex have some cheap 512 ddr2- years g'tee+ free post if not in locally.

I know someone who "put" ddr2 into a ddr m/bo !! It did break! I recently added 2x256ddr to an old dell which had 4 ram slots but not all boards have the spaces.0 -

Just post links and stop rambling.
We are talking about a Windows XP machine with 512 MB RAM. With your knowldge you should be able to make a educated guess at the RAM needed. I don't see too many sticks of that priced at £15 per GB, so I too would have appreciated a link.
So, can you link us to your general price of £15 for a 1GB RAM module?0 -

Thank you. We appreciate this much more than useless rambling about prices. This is about saving money. People appreciate links to good prices.0
