:)Hi all,
Oh (((jwil))) hope the bank honours the DD and then you just have to get the money in the account to bring the overdrawn amount up to date. I checked my bank account today and there were 2 direct debits due to come out tomorrow to the same company - they usually come out on the 21st (i've checked back on statements):eek::eek: so i had to borrow some money to cover the payments and i'll pay this back at the end of the week
We will get there hon - i kinda think of it sometimes like there's got to be a tipping point so at the moment its all struggle and hard work for us but we will get to a stage where the end is in sight and everything becomes easier
peaceandfreedom - yes my blueberries were in a pot and its that compost but i know someone who has 2 of them and they get a huge crop where mine's been quite paltry. The pasta was spinach and ricotta which i had in a tomato sauce - that part of my problem - i love bread, pasta, potatoes, quiche, pies - definitely all the 'wrong' things
if its ok for me to ask peaceandfreedom you mentioned something about passive income the other day - definitely something i could do with as at the moment i'm working my socks off trying to get the pennies in  which i think we all are! Would you mind sharing details with us? *Gosh i feel so cheeky asking* If i'm being very cheeky asking just say so - OH can't get over the questions i ask people sometimesNothing horrendous like what people earn or what they've paid for their houses etc. although its acceptable for his friends to ask me these things - where's the rolly eyed smiley when you need it? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Birthday meals - biggest problem is its all with people who earn loads more - i've learnt not to bother trying to order the cheapest thing as the bill is always just split equally anyways - plus everyone else order bottles of wine. Maybe what you need to do (and I know it's easier said than done) is to keep a buffer amount in the account, to allow for an error in your calculations or unexpected annual DDs. Then you have to pretend to yourself that that money isn't there, if you see what I mean, so that you don't spend it.
Things will get better, remember that.
Thanks peaceandfreedom, there normally is a few £ spare in the account, it's just this month is so tight, I only sent over what I had to. It can only get better!"Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee0 -

They haven't. The dd normally comes out on 16th, and it hasn't been taken. It's a bit annoying that they've bounced such a small amount rather than just letting it go through and then charging me for unauthorised od.
Though saying that, with the other account I had an od with, I used to complain if they let a payment go through rather than bounce it, so I guess whatever they do I'm not happy :rotfl:
It's got to get better, surely!"Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee0 -
Right, time to regroup.
I'm playing with the snowball, going to do an SOA for myself and recalculate everything to see where I am."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee0 -

Well, I really don't mind you askingbut there's not a lot to tell so far. All I know is, that to sort myself out financially over the next 15-20 years or so, I can't survive on just earning money directly - i.e. an honest day's work for an honest day's pay. Instead, I would like lots of honest days' pay for a single day's work - in other words, passive income.
There are loads of ways of earning passive income - write a book, write a song, have a profitable buy-to-let etc. I want to explore various ways as I would like numerous different streams of passive income. The most likely route for me is having some online sources of income. This site has proved very interesting so far.
As I said, it will take some time (years) to build up useful sources of income but I have some initial ideas that might be workable. What I need to do is actually get started rather than just think about it.
If I already had some passive income streams up and working, I would share ideas but I don't. But there is no shortage of info online - the trick is to come up with ideas that you can run with.DedicatedDFW wrote: »Birthday meals - biggest problem is its all with people who earn loads more - i've learnt not to bother trying to order the cheapest thing as the bill is always just split equally anyways - plus everyone else order bottles of wine. Yes, that's the problem with meals out, you can't really be economical when the whole bill is being split equally. I rarely drink so I find that I often subsidise other people's drinking, which is a bit annoying especially if it's a small group. One night, I drove a group of 4 of us out to dinner and I only drank water all night. The bill was split 4 ways and I really hoped someone would say 'But no, you should pay less because you didn't drink any of the two bottles of the wine or the G&Ts etc.' But no one said and I felt it would be cheap to object. Sigh!0 -
Thanks for sharing that site peaceandfreedom, it looks good. I shall have a proper look at it."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee0

Hi everyone,
I did read briefly last night but couldn't focus after work being very bleurgh!
peaceandfreedom - I will make a note of the website in a mo. the funny thing is though i have thought of some of the suggestions you've put on so i'm already thinking along the right lines and just need to go back to that
i once looked into get a group of us - me and 2 friends - into share buying - i'd looked into it and we could pool a little bit of money - i think we were looking at £25 - £30 a month each as an affordable amount and then we were going to take turns choosing where to invest it. Sadly after all the positive noises and encouragement it didn't happen. From this, all those years ago, i must have already been thinking of passive income
Passive income is definitely something i need and also have been seriously thinking about a buy to let as i have no pension to speak ofi do worry about how i'll manage when i'm older so this has been a serious consideration for me.
Ooh and the meals out - yep regarding driving been there tooa big problem for us is that some of the people we go out with come out as a family - so there's just us 2 and there can be 4, 5 or 6 of them and the children although young, have a starter, main course and dessert from the adult menu and lots of fizzy drinks and then the bill is just split in 2 - between us and them :eek::eek: They have both got very well paid jobs, no debt, big house, cars, luxury holidays, lots of savings. i know i shouldn't but i sometimes think we are honestly saving them money when we all go out together
plus they choose a place they can all walk to so they can both drink so the bill is very big - actually its been quite a while since we last went out with them now
jwil - are you posting up your new SOA? i think your sig looks different am not sure if i'm right though? And about my direct debits - person borrowing me money transferred the money into another account that they have instead of into mine - total accident and i didn't realise until i saw i was overdrawn yesterday
The thing is with a buffer - my overdraft should be a buffer - but when it came to paying the mortgage on an income less than the mortgage it got used and i'm still battling with it now
So glad its not raining just now - get a sick feeling when i come in, or come down stairs and there's a pool of water behind the front doorGutters and boiler first then the door  - boiler is a priority as i'm sure we are spending way more than we need to having the heating on just to get hot water - and when we have the heating on its all on full - or nothing works

DDFW - I didn't get to do an updated SOA yesterday, but did recalculate everything and so yep I've changed my siggie. I'm not sure it will stay like that though as I haven't decided how best I want to show it. :rotfl:
I've got my DFD as being 66 months which is when my loan ends, but in actual fact the snowball calculator shows that it could be a few months less. I've left it as it is as the moment, but it's nice to think it could be less than 5 years.
My CC debt has gone up about as much as expected, and that is my main focus now. The loan and money I owe DH are reducing anyway each month.
I haven't been snowballing properly, so I think I'm going to do that and try and clear my cards one at a time, rather than paying more than the minimum to them all."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee0 -
The meal out thing - it's funny, I have always refused to split the bill evenly, and have always paid my way. I think it's a very unfair situation to be in - especially if you are not drinking, or if as you say DDFW, there are 5 or 6 in the other party vs 2. I'd not put up with that at all - it's incredibly rude of them to expect a 50/50 split!
I've been the same with drinks too - I don't take part in 'rounds' - that way I can both control the amount I drink and the amount I spend.
I don't think it's ever caused an issue, I just say I'm a bit skint so prefer to just pay for what I have."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee0 -
Sorry folks I'm not ignoring you I've had trouble logging on MSE website.
I can't remember the various things you've been discussing now (age problem) but heregoes.
jwil what a bu**er about the dds it hasn't happened to me for a while but I do remeber it well. I always found it odd that the charges were more than it would have cost if they'd honoured it. One bank would pay silly dds but bounce the mortgage  Your PADding's going well.
I have two blueberry plants in ericaceous compost in pots. It's their first year so not a huge crop this year, likewise with the raspberries and blackberries. I've had about 50 lb of plums and have tried varying ways of using them up, jam, crumbles, just stewed to add to porridge, de-stoned, sugared and froze and I've froze some whole. Pears next
