Hi, mine did this when I cooked it in the slow cooker and it was cooking for ages too. In the end, I took it out of the slow cooker and put it in a saucepan and finished it off on the hob - turned out great then. Hope this helps.0

Sorry, wasn't sure which slow cooker thread to put this in but I am sure someone can find the right one for it.
I have just bought a packet of Whitworths Dessert Rice ie pudding rice (would have bought some cheaper stuff but the roads are a bit icey this morning so had to pop into a corner shop).
Anyway, the box says 2oz rice, 1 pint semi skimmed milk, 1oz castor sugar, ½ oz butter and ground nutmeg (haven't got the nutmeg though).
I am going to make it in the slow cooker (have a little one that I can use, have turkey stew and dumplings in the big one). Can someone please tell me how many hours I should cook it for and do you cook on high or low please?
I haven't got any nutmeg but do have cinammon, mixed spice and vanilla flavouring, should I use those?

Hi sb44,
There's an earlier thread with lots of advice on cooking rice pudding in the slow cooker that should help so I'll add your thread to it to keep the replies together.

I made one yesterday using 90g rice to one pint of milk. Had it on high for 2 hours then low for another 2. Also had no nutmeg so used a touch of cinammon, was lovely.DFW Nerd #104 I :heartpuls my Kitten

Well, I was going to try the cinammon then found an unopened jar of ground nutmeg at the back of the cupboard.
I will see how this one goes and try some with just cinammon in next time. I say next time, that is assuming this is edible and not just a burned piece of slime in a few hours time!
Fingers crossed.

I hope it turned out okI have massive problems with rice pudding in the slow cooker. Unless I stir it every hour it just never soaks up the milk and it ends up in clumps at the bottom. Also it ALWAYS takes a lot longer than the manual reckons AND I have to turn it on high instead of medium
I tried it without nutmeg once and it was fine, never thought of using cinamon but it sounds really nice.Even if you stumble, you're still moving forward.0 -

That is exactly how it went.
I had it on low for 4 hours and it didn't do much so I turned it on high for an hour and did, as you say have to keep stirring it but it did thicken.
When my husband came home from work I told him to close his eyes and try something new that I had cooked.
His face wasn't a pretty picture as he thought I had cooked semolina which he remembers from school, one thing that a lot of us hated.
When told what it was he said he liked the taste but not the consistency.
Good!
That means there is more for me, it tasted wonderful.
I put a few drops of vanilla flavouring and a sprinkle of ground nutmeg in before I switched it on.
I will def make it again but will have to rethink the cooking temps.0 -
Hello lovely people of MSE, I'm hoping you can help.
I decided to make a rice pudding as a surprise for my husband on his return from work and began to make it realising half way through the process that it was asking for evaporated milk - we didn't have any so I just used normal milk. I think this was probably the wrong thing to do. It looks like hot milk with pudding rice floating around. Is there anyway I can save it? Can I just drain some of the milk off?
Thanks!,___,

hi all, i adore rice pud in my slow cooker, never sticks or burns for me..this is what i use -
1/4 mug (normal coffee mug) of pudding rice or basmati rice -basmati seems cook better for me *shrugs*
1/2 or 3/4 same mug of sugar
3 same mugs of whole milk
1 mug of evaporated milk
then put on low just as going to bed, wake up to the most amazing smell and pud that lasts minutes!!
