I would have thought that under the sale of Goods Act if the settees break they are not fit for purpose as surely a settee should be able to cope with an 11 stone person and a 13 stone person together on one seat, maybe even being more energetic than a single plonk down!!! Perhaps all 3 of them on one settee, might be asking a lot.

This thread has made me laugh so much!! thanks hahahaha :rotfl::rotfl:
  • I thought for a minute we had solved the problem - let them sit on it and if it breaks complain to manufacturer and demand replacement.
However, what happens if it doesn't break completely but the 70 stones puts a strain on it and shortens the life of the sofa?

I guess that means to avoid the problem there needs to be a method of preventing the relatives from sitting on the sofas.
So, either be straight with them (my preferred method), tell a white lie to prevent them sitting on them, or find a way to prevent them visiting the house.

AS far as I can see it those are the three options.

I'll probably go straight to Hell, but I have to say this is the funniest thread I have read in a long time. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Thanks to all those, fat and thin, who have contributed.
  • I don't think they would break the sofa actually. I assume that the old sofa was quite knackered already and your OH's sister just finished it off by bouncing on it inadvertently. You should be fine with the new sofa.

However, as you don't seem close to your OH's siblings, why not say you have to do some shopping at the Trafford centre yourself and therefore it would be much easier to meet there directly and have lunch and coffees there as it seems that you don't want to have them in your home for more than the weight/sofa issue.

I have to say I don't like "fat people bashing" just as I don't like very slim or anorexic people being insulted. I agree that of course: "less food and more excercise" will work, but to get to 20 stone or more, there must be other emotional factors that contribute to a person being this weight and feeling helpless to lose this amount of weight.

I feel desparately sorry for these very overweight people. It must be so, so horrible being stared at, openly talked about and fingers pointed at you (it happens, I have seen it many, many times on the street and in shops).

Why don't we all just make sure we are happy with our bodies and let other people be as they only harm themselves and not other people by being the size they are.
  • Plywood under the sofa might help. Also it seems unlikely that 3 people who are that large would be able to fit onto one sofa so the combined weight would probably be less than 70 stone. Maybe you could try and make sure that you sit down strategically so you/husband/kids sit next to each of them to balance the weight out? Could be a bit complicated though!

It's obviously not the question the OP asked but thought I would add my tuppence worth. Sometimes being obese is about lifestyle but it can also be a symptom of other illnesses as others have mentioned. I'm obese - 15 stone - and have always struggled to lose much weight. I exercise regularly and eat relatively healthily. I always assumed that I was kidding myself and must be eating more than I realised. However, having been to the doctors recently about a couple of problems that I would not have connected to my weight - I wasn't going to look for an excuse for being fat, if you see what I mean.

I'm now being tested for PCOS and Cushings Syndrome. The first is exacerbated by being overweight but also makes it hard to lose weight. The second is caused by a tumour and will cause someone to put on lots of weight. That's definitely not a 'lifestyle choice' as someone put it.

I'm not saying that's the case for everyone, or even that its the case for me (who knows what the final diagnosis will be), but people should bear it in mind before judging everyone that's overweight.

I would have thought that putting some dining/kitchen chairs out in the living-room with a comment like "I thought these might be more comfortable for you because the new sofas are so very low, so not easy for you to get in and out of" might be a tactful way of avoiding the issue.

Sorry, I'm not interested in getting involved in the whole morbidly obese-bashing that's been going on.

I did suggest to DH that we bring in the old sofas and hide the new ones in the garden,

unfortunatley the old sofas are being picked up today by the council.

That was a very quick way to get rid of the cough cough simplest solution to your cough cough problem.
