The OP said it wasnt her drink and even though it must be very annoying he doesnt seem to be helping in solving the problem.

I know the OP said it was HIS drink but not in the original post (below).

What laptop does he need that requires him to spend £2000 on it? I work in Computing and I have a Mac and it was nowhere near that price.
I was actually thinking that as well, even my main machine I use for 3D CAD and Solid Works didn't cost me that much and it runs smoother than a cashmere codpiece. At the end of the day its only a machine, no point in arguing about it.

It was actually his drink that he'd left right in front of the laptop at the edge of the table. I should have been more careful, i take full responsibility for knocking it over, but i didn't leave it there in the first place.
    ...

I know this is my fault and I feel terribly guilty, and if i'm honest I'm finding it hard to be around him because i feel so bad, and i know he's very upset. I'm just not sure how to cope with him being so upset.

It's not your fault - or at least not all your fault. Leaving a drink right beside a £2k computer is a very, very stupid thing to do. I'd be devastated if my laptop died because of the stuff that's on it, but if the damage was a spilled drink then I'd assume the data was recoverable and although I'd be quiet for a few days I'd get on with things once the data was retrieved.

Actually, what was he drinking? Water shouldn't cause significant problems once it's dried out; Coke is probably the worst thing to have got in there.

The other thing I thought of is, is there anything that might be on there that would get him into trouble if a data recovery person were to see it?

I have knocked a glass of beer onto my laptop and after a few days of no use it worked fine although it may be worth getting the keyboard cleaned properly as one or two keys did stick for a about a week :-)

The highest spec Macbook pro starts at 1900, with some add ons it could easily be 2k. I paid 1300 for a pretty basic macbook pro.

Have you spoken to someone about rescuing the contents of the hard drive?

I knocked coffee onto my husbands laptop.....he went balistic (although i had many warnings re drink close to it. He uses it for work!!)....just required a new keyboard, i think total cost was £25. It was a DELL if that helps. Goodluck!!

  • May I suggest that if you do put it in an airing cupboard, but it in a sealed plastic bag with loose rice ... rice soaks up the water. I i've fixed 3 mobile phones this way in the past

Water does not inherently break electronics. Take out the battery and open any compartments you can up so that the moisture can get out.

If he's lost data - that's his fault for not backing it up :)
  • The same thing happened to us but with a glass of blackcurrant.

The insurance company paid up after we sent in an inedependent report from a local computer repair shop. OH had fun buying a new laptop - everyone happy!

I don't think it really matters how much it is, that's what it costs to replace so that's what it costs. I've done the research myself, i know he's not pulling one over on me.

I haven't contacted anyone about repairing it or hard drive recovery, it's his laptop, he can sort it out, for two reasons, one it's not entirely my fault this happened as someone said, and two because he knows far more about laptops than me. but i am going to mention both options to him tonight. i'll let you know what happens!

Just a thought - but how was the laptop paid for etc?

Was it a gift or paid for with inheritance?

My ipod was my graduation present (my degree mark is etched in the back of it) and when it inevitably breaks or is lost, I'm definitely going to be upset about it.

If its nothing like that, then I agree with the others - he's being childish and surly since contents insurance is there for reasons just like this.
