The OP said it wasnt her drink and even though it must be very annoying he doesnt seem to be helping in solving the problem.
Whats the point of insurance if your not going to use it especially with high value items.
Tell him your going to make a claim (if covered), pay the excess and any increase on the next renewal and to stop being so cruel to you.
If he hasnt backed up any important data then thats his problem.
I think he's taken the blame thing too far, what other options do you have but to make a claim.

My DH would be mad and gutted if I did something similar (laptop is historically mine but the TV etc he loves), BUT he'd get over it and would def look into claiming on the insurance...what's the point in having insurance if it's not for exactly this kind of thing? Obviously you wouldn't bother if it was just a £100 claim with a £50 excess say but for something this big it's well worth it!

It does remind me slightly of an episode of Peep Show where Mark gets all excited when his tv gets smashed up as he can finally get something out of the insurance companies he's been paying all these years!!

Thanks all, checked the insurance, we seem to have a pretty good policy, it is covered, as is any software he's paid to download onto it, we lose our no claims if we claim, but we don't have any no claims anyway as we only moved in this year! so i'm going to gently try and get him to look at that again and go from there.
Don't understand the problem - you have been paying for insurance which you can now claim off for a new laptop. WHat is there to talk about? You are paying the excess, it is not likely to go up by much next year. Why is he still giving you the cold shoulder?
I can understand the initial upset but for goodness sake he is behaving like a child, especially leaving a drink right next to it in the first place. If it was that important to him , he shouldn't leave drinks lying around.......
    It's 50/50 to my eyes.

Well he's at work at the minute so obviously i don't know how he's doing but i'm sure by the time he gets home tonight he'll be ok. I've emailed him the insurance policy document for him to look at on his lunch so we'll see. I think he'll be ok once he knows it can be replaced without too much drama. :)

It may dry out if you are lucky. I spilled a glass of wine over my laptop. It took four days but it did dry out and start working again eventually. What kind of drink was it?

He is being a complete cry baby, it's exactly what you have insurance for in the first place. Stop apologising to him, you are just pandering to his sulk.

Geez, his initial reaction completely understandable but to carry it on any longer is just plain childish.

It was lager, and if the inside of his laptop is as sticky as the coffee table was afterwards i can see why it's not working.

I feel a lot better now i know it's covered by the insurance. i think i'm going to stop apologising, and start being practical, getting it fixed or replaced is going to be the best way to resolve the situation. thanks everyone for your suggestions, you really are a lovely bunch :)

Does he want it fixed/replaced or not?
Sorry, he's acting like a spoilt brat now. I understand him being initially upset, (although he left the drink next to the laptop so isn't 100% blameless) but you've got accidental damage cover on your insurance, use it, that's what you pay the premiums for.

I agree. It sounds as if he can't shake his feelings of anger and so isn't ready to accept the solution, as then he has no reason to still be angry.

I think his reaction was completely OTT from the start to be honest! My OH bought himself a new laptop a few months ago and he spilt blackcurrant juice all over it on the same day! He was a bit gutted, but left it to dry and then it was fine (although the buttons are still a bit sticky! lol).

All he needed for cheering up was a cup of coffee! At the end of the day, it's a material possession and can be replaced. No one was hurt or injured. And your OH is also responsible for the accident, so don't let him place all the blame on you. If he was that bothered about his laptop, why did he leave a drink in such a silly place??

What laptop does he need that requires him to spend £2000 on it? I work in Computing and I have a Mac and it was nowhere near that price.

Even if the premiums do rise, it'll still work out cheaper to put in a claim than to fork out the £2k for a new one. As for the hard drive - you should be able to recover the data from it fairly easily as long as can still "spin up". So appologise profusely, and say you'll pay for any increase in premiums and for the cost of data recovery.
