How am i supposed to find this money?

I agree with some of the other posters about possible reasons for him being so upset:
- potentially lost documents
- if he needs it for work and maybe has a deadline to meet, he may be worried about getting into trouble
- maybe he'd asked you numerous times not to have drinks near it
Are you sure that it will cost £2K to replace?
It might be that although it cost £2K to buy, the same spec is now cheaper (as technology does move forward quickly).
I think the only way you're going to find out is to ask him.
Do check out your contents insurance though.0 -
Home insurance - we have it, with accidental damage cover. i suggested this, and said I would pay the excess, but he seems to think that our premium will sky rocket next year, and that it will have an impact on things like his car insurance too?!
I had 3 claims in a year 18 months ago. I had a flood, a burgalry and the laptop...my house insurance went up by 47p and my car insurance came down by £150.67 the 2 are not connected
Car insurance quotes do not ask about home insurance claims, just car claims. (or none of the car policies i have have ever done so and i have been driving 15 years!)
Even if it did go up it wouldnt go up £2,000!!0 -
Must be a Mac?
In all seriousness, I would just talk to him and let him know how sorry you are (I'm sure you have done this a million times already). Hopefully some of it is recoverable. Let it dry out and see what's what and then take it from there. It may only be a case of buying a new power supply or processor, or something much cheaper than a whole replacement.
I can understand him being that upset though, that is all his work and it it's that expensive, then he worked hard for it. My husband would probably react the same way. You guys will work it out though.
Thanks for this, i think you're right, i just needed someone to tell me this is a normal reaction.current debt as at 10/01/11- £12500 -
His reaction does seem rather extreme....
I would try the suggestions above about drying it out, if that doesn;t work get an expert to look at it. It could well be repairable or at least the hard drive could be retrieved. Failing that it looks like your only option is the insurance. I doubt that it would increase the premiums by too much and at least he'll have a new laptop. That is after all why you pay insurance. I would be inclined to ask him why he has had such an extreme reaction. I can understand him blowing a fuse at the time but not to carry on (especially as it was his drink:)) Hope you get it sorted soon.0 -
Thanks all, checked the insurance, we seem to have a pretty good policy, it is covered, as is any software he's paid to download onto it, we lose our no claims if we claim, but we don't have any no claims anyway as we only moved in this year! so i'm going to gently try and get him to look at that again and go from there.current debt as at 10/01/11- £12500

I had a claim on the house insurance last year in excess of £8000 in the end.. and my monthly payments went up by £6 a month.. but over 12 months that is not the cost of the repairs which were done.
The info is still there on the harddrive and can be rescued.. he may have the abilty/hardware to do it himself or may need to sort that as well.. but it is a piece of metal and plastic and while the stuff may be valuable.. I'd be gutted if mine died.. it is hardly worth carrying on about and shedding tears over..
Tell him I said he should have had drinks away from it if it meant so much.. and it would have been insured independantly or named as an individual item on his home insurance and backed up regularly.
I think he has reacted totally OTT and a dose of get a grip may be needed.
Why should you pay all of it? You knocked over HIS drink HE had left in a stupid place..
My OH is practically limbless at the moment as his lappy is needing a repair.. quite possibly my fault for falling over the cable 1000 times, which HE had snaked across the room.. but he isn't making me miserable over it! I might be tempted to give him a slap if he did.. these things happen it isn't like it was done deliberately.. noone has been injured, it is a replaceable piece of stuff.
He should have had it insured if it is really worth that much!.. OH's is valued at about £800 and insured.
He should check his insurance policy and if you want offer to go halves on the excess.. it wasn't entirely your fault nor deliberate!!
If it isn't covered on his check on yours.
If not he may just have to be a grown up about it and retreive the info and find a new one to buy.
but he has to accept some of the blame for leaving a drink there in the first place!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

Double check that as well.. you don't necessarily lose ALL the no claims.. mine went from 8 years no claims to 5 after my monster claim.. my son accidentally set the kitchen alight so a fair bit of damage was done.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
This happened to my laptop and it wouldn't switch on. I took it to our local expert and he got it working again with no loss of data.0

Ok just to explain a bit. Last night I accidentally knocked a drink over on to my other half''s v expensive laptop. He hit the roof, and is still upset about it this morning. I said I'd replace it, but I have no idea how to find the 2 grand it will cost. I just don't have that kind of room in my budget. it has to be that particular one, because of his work, so no chance of a cheaper option.
The reason I've posted here is because the money is one thing, but I also have no idea what to say to him, he was in tears last night, and he's still really upset this morning, barely speaking to me. Is it normal to get that upset over something like this, he's acting really devestated? I'm trying to relate it to something like him crashing my car, but I don't know, I'm just not understanding, and obviously i need to. so can anyone help?
Maybe he was crying as he had a vast collection of pr0n in it, and he cannot recover it0 -

When I argued that this wasn't the case, he said it probably wasn't covered anyway, although I remember all the drama about getting home insurance, making sure it was covered, so I'm sure it must be covered. he was similarly dismissive last night when I asked if it could be repaired. Going to have a look through the insurance documents and make sure it is covered and take another run at this tonight i think. i didn't think about claiming a repair on the insurance.
Does he want it fixed/replaced or not?
Sorry, he's acting like a spoilt brat now. I understand him being initially upset, (although he left the drink next to the laptop so isn't 100% blameless) but you've got accidental damage cover on your insurance, use it, that's what you pay the premiums for.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0
