I thought that after you have been discharged from BR, you didn't have to declare it anymore.. I was discharged about 4 years ago and when any bank etc asks me if I have ever been bankrupt I just say no and nobody has ever pulled me up about it - its certainly not on my credit files - i've checked loads of times. I'm sure you don't have to declare it but may be wrong? Does anybody else know? I want to open a basic account now with Yorkshire and if they ask me I will just say no.
Sorry, I meant the BR is removed from all credit files after 6 years after the date of BR so after then nobody can get to know and you don't have to declare it - does this make sense? Apologies but I am knew to this forum thing and I am not sure what I am doing???????????

i went into the regent street branch in london with a pre booked appointment at 10 ockluck- regent street to open an ready cash basic account with my driving licence and a bank statement which was least than 3 months old.

after being kept some 20 mins to be seen i had to ansnwer alot of questions about my finances and reasons why i was unemployed etc - really did not think that these question where relevant coonsiderig in their brochures they stated the account is open to anyone over 16. previous i had been told by a staff member that anyone apart from those recently declared bankrupt wiould be eligble to open account.

anyway after answering all the questions the girl cam back and said they wernt prepared to open an account until i provide 6 months worth of statements showing my benefits paying into my account etc and then they would send it off to another branch howevere that still would not gaurantee that i would be able to open an account
    - was somewhat perplexed at this sudden change of criteria to open a basic account etc - and thought its too much hassle and tryiing to get through to the branch initally to make an appointment was such a hassle as this is the only onoe brnach in the whole of london.

so im leaving it and just stay with co-op

I posted this fact a few days ago on another thread. Yorkshire readily allow people Readycash accounts in your position (unless undischarged bankrupt). The sole exception seems to be the one London branch. I have heard this stated before by others.

My assumption is that the London branch is more restictive simply because they are the only branch in the region. They are probably more geared towards business and executive accounts there.

I am sure if you went to a branch in YB's heartland (which appears to be virtually everywhere else), they'b be far more accommodating. The branch network appears to thin out the further South one goes. In fact they use the Clydesdale name in many parts of the South as well as Scotland.

So don't be too disheartened. I'm afraid your predicament is probably one of geography than anything else.
  • Actually I've just had a look at their branch locator map and it's interesting.

There are no branches in Wales, South-West, South East or Norfolk. They seem to be quite a lot everywhere else reaching down from the North, through the Midlands and then thinning out before nearly hitting the South Coast.

    I wonder why?

The Clydesdale (i.e main) brand is used in Scotland & the South-East.
They view that Yorkshire brand only has value in the Northern England.
Also, in the South - East their focus is business/commercial banking, and apparently being a Scottish bank is viewed as a positive point.

If Barclays are now issuing Visa Debit on their basic account, I think that it's better than Maestro. It can be used for worldwide & will give you access to their cash machine alliance abroad.

Do you have a source for this? There's nothing on Barclays website yet.
