Basic Bank Account & Debit Card Update

I see under the "how to apply" bit for the YB ReadyCash account it has this:
Telephone 0845 602 6198 (Monday - Sunday 8.00am - 8.00pm)
does this mean if I do not live near a branch (which I don't) it can be opened via phone/post?
edit - no, it has to be in branch0 -

just come in to barclays branch and ask to open a cash card with connect electronic at first they may say that you can't get it, but tell them that they should check branch communications.
also sometimes to apply for a cash card you may have to fill an application form rather then open an acc. in the branch. this is normal procedure in barclays and after filling the form you should get your card send to you within 10 working days.0 -
Barclays have now updated their website. If you go to Current Accounts and click on Cash Card Account it explains that you can have either a Cash Card or a Connect Card. So, the choice is yours.
Another good move for the Basic Account holders methinks.0 -
Barclays website is showing "Connect Card" there wording for a Visa Debt Card so possibly it's not an Electron Card. It is a proper Visa Debit with Cheque Guarantee Limit. Anyone can confirm please?
1 downside, ther cash account do not offer online banking.

hi there
it is a full Visa Debit card without the cheque guarantee facilty. They call them 2-in-1 cards (ATM and Debit) as opposed to 3-in-1 (which included the Cheque Card). Cheques are going to be extinct eventually I would imagine on the high street at least, I dont know of any major retailer that still takes them. I see signs up all over the place say "from xx/xx/xx we will no longer take cheques", so the cheque card is not that much use.

There is always something that brings these accounts down a few notches. LLoyds offer a debit card on their accounts but you can't use it in any other cash machines apart from LLoyds ones. With this you can't use internet banking which is ridicolous. Don't really care anyway.Barclays website is showing "Connect Card" there wording for a Visa Debt Card so possibly it's not an Electron Card. It is a proper Visa Debit with Cheque Guarantee Limit. It does seems like a odd restriction by Barclays... I mean, You would expect them to offer Online Banking on their basic account and restrict counter service, Not the other way round!

I've just recieved a letter from citibank saying my application for an 'access account' has been provisionally approved.
Does this actually mean I've been accepted for an account with Visa card, providing my ID is ok? Really don't wanna be getting my hopes up!0 -
I went in branch and applied for YB Readycash account, was approved and given sort code and account number...this was last Tuesday. Still no sign of any card yet though.
Also found it weird that they give you a savings account with a Maestro card too!0 -
Lufcgirl.
That is quite simply because it isn't. At least if it was, it'd be the worlds worst at 0% interest.
It is a current account and a very good choice too!0
