The conversation went like this -

MW - Right, I'm going to take blood for the Down syndrome test.

Mum - No, I don't want to have that done, it doesn't matter to me as there are already disabled children in my family and I don't mind.

MW - There was a young girl (I'm nearly 25) who lives here that had this test done and it said low risk. She had a baby with Down's, this only happened a year or so ago so you just never know what will happen.

Mum - Like I said, no thanks.

Is she trying to get thm to have the same test that you had or a more accurate one?So what is her point? This is illogical she is saying... I did this test and it came back low risk and was wrong, so I am trying to sell you this test by telling you how inaccurate it is?

Do you know what she actually said about your son?

I posted the exact conversation a couple of posts up the page :)

Im a retired midwife now and you do have to be very careful about what you say and that you dont break confidentiality. Are you really the only person to have had a downs baby recently? I say that because I had none born for years and then three in a month? Clustering is a phenomenon that happens to all health workers. I always get a run of conditions...like breech presentation.

Talk to PALS regarding this if you want to make a complaint. I understand you might have unresolved issues regarding the birth of your baby? perhaps you were not happy with the care she gave you particularly if this was an undiagnosed Downs baby? If you would like your case looked at write a letter to the head of midwifery and they will meet with you and go through all your notes. Perhaps that would help?

Yes. I'm 100% positive that my wee one is the only one. Also, the MW said a year or so ago...my wee one has just turned one.

Not exactly gossip, or breaching patient confidentiality in my opinion, and neither is it pressuring for a test. If it was said like that I would take it as friendly advice using a professionals experience.

Bear in mind that the midwife may cover other areas than just your town, it may not have been you she was referring to. edit, noticed the 'lives here' bit... hmmm

if that's how the conversation went then I don't think she has done anything wrong with regards persuading others to get the test done.

She has however made you easily indentifiable (if of course you are the only under 25 year old with a DS baby in your area!) and therefore broken confidentiality

It's the same test! And yes, I think that's exactly what she is trying to say!

That's how the girl told me it went. She said she felt that MW was trying to pressure her by telling her about my LO.

No happy. Just reminding my DS as I have often talked about my grandpa and lovely memories of the school.
