My friend has just found out she is having a little girl and is calling her Kaih Grace. Not sure what the meaning is but think its African.0

I do hope that in the future people will learn to pronounce unusual names more accurately than they do now. I have a very unusual name and hate it when people change to another much more common similar name. I had a boss that for 3 years called me by the wrong name despite correction. It is disrespectful. (my name is not made up it is an old english/ french name that is a family name)0

Ophelia is lovely but it will get shortened and that makes me think of oaf. Not so lovely.
I wanted to call DD2 Hope but she would ended being called Ho and I wouldn't wish that on any woman so she is Ciara (keera) or sierra as in the car or kiora as in the drink or key are a or see are a and many other variations.Sadly, you don't have any badges yet but keep trying! See what you could get........... oh boo hoo I am crying into my wine.0 -
My name is Iona. Not difficult to pronounce or spell....although you'd be suprised at the number of people who can't do either. The majority have never even heard of it. I got 'bullied' when I started 'going out' with a lad whos surname was Carr.....I-own-a Carr. Yeah, its pretty childish, and I used to deal with it by challenging people to find a suffix I hadnt heard! Interestingly, my mother had never even considered the "I-own-a" bit until I came home and told her. Besides...abit of grief is character building and never did me any harm.
Kids get bullied 'coz their fat/thin/ginger/ugly/short/tall etc etc etc and having experienced it I would MUCH rather have an unusual name and get abit of stick than be called "Sarah Smith" (no offence to any Sarah's or Smiths posting..). Once people have heard an unusual name, they tend to remember it and this can really be a good thing (provided the kid isnt being remembered for the wrong reasons :P) As for pronunciation....anyone with half a brain cell can read and pronounce Ophelia correctly. Besides, it is a very very pretty name.0 -
It may have been said, but Ophelia did not come to a happy end. Great name if you're not the superstitious type though. People will spell your name wrong whatever you are called. Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x0

Ciara is such a pretty name.Man plans and God laughs...Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.0 -
I called my DD Cassandra, when she was around 2 someone won Crufts with an afghan hound called Cassy, within 3 months there were loads of Cassy's around.
My MIL hated the name & shortened it to Sandra, my Mum thought the name was unlucky, Cassandra was the name of a prophetess who was doomed never to be believed.
Also don't call a girls anything beginning with Sh, we have 20 Sh names at school & around 5 girls with each name, it's very confusing
Never let success go to your head, never let failure go to your heart.0 -
I thought Cassandra was the temptress of men?Man plans and God laughs...Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.0

What about Orla? That's my favourite girl's name, but there won't be anymore babies around here.
ETA it means "golden child", or words to that effect, so if she's a wee blondie it would be perfect. It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0 -
If I was looking at Shakespearean names I'd like Hermia, Desdemona and Tamora.
I was nearly a Poppy, but it was just a bit too wacky at the time so my dad wimped out, its a real shame as I'd have loved it and I ended up with a name that about every third or fourth girl my age has. I always thought I might call a daughter Poppy but it seems to be quite popular now which has ruined the appeal a bit!
I like old fashioned names like Audrey, Nora or Henrietta.0
