The reason i asked is when we told my MIL she said it was a strange name, i explained it was from Hamlet then she said why would i want such a old name - can't win. When i picked Scarlett she said it was a 'street walkers' name and i should go with something traditional - but i actually picked it as i love the book Gone with the wind.

You should name your baby however you wish. You MIL has had her turn at naming kids with her own children. Dont let her nasty comments deter you from going with what you like. Quite frankly I think your MIL is being rather rude.

Yes, but I think you should take people's instinctive reactions into account - e.g. if you suggest a name to your best friend and she takes a few moments to suppress the urge to giggle then you're probably onto something bad there...

My mum nearly called my brother "Ralph" - but was deterred by the negative reaction from her cousin, who said something along the lines of "RALPH, RALPH!!! - oh, erm, yes, erm, that's great dear..."
  • Love reading all the name suggestions for girls, my three girls are Stephanie
    Julia and
    Gillian
none of them are used that much now although there are a few Stephanies about.
If your looking for more modern names my grandaughters are as follows
    Ria Atlanta
    Amaya
    Lucia pronounced Loosha
    Isla
    Willow and
    Brodie.

    Might give people some ideas.

Congratulations on the birth of Alexander! My Alex is now 24 and I've always loved his name. We called him "Beetle" when he was tiny, after the poem by A A Milne that Melanie recorded as a song..
"I found a little beetle so that beetle was his name.
But I called him Alexander, and he answered just the same.
