Lots of lovely suggestions on this thread. I too love the Gaelic names but would personally steer clear as they are just too unpronounable/unspellable for most.
I will give my kids 'regular' names, nothing made-up or difficult to spell. I've lived for 25 years with a name that people just can't spell or pronounce and although I do like my name, it gets a bit exhausting having to correct people all the time. And some people just pronounce it wrong no matter how many times I have corrected them.
I would also steer clear of cutesy names. Is it Jamie Oliver who called his two Poppy Honey and Daisy Boo? Sure, that's cute when they're four years old, but what about when they're 39?
I like Agatha, Norah and Grace for girls, and William, Robert and Jeremy for boys.0 -
Someone earlier posted about Portia, I assume this is pronounced the same as the car (Porsche?)?? My Mum wanted to call me that before I was born ... I'm sooooo glad she didn't!!!
Meaning.. pig!!!
Just what you'd call your pretty little princess..
I have a Claudia.. meaning 'lame/cripple' ... I really don't like it but couldn't for the life of me think of anything I did like.. thankfully she is one of mine who does no have mobility issues or my guilt complex would be huge!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Do you pronounce Seren SEH-ren or seh-REN? Ie emphasis on the first or second syllable?
I think pets are a great way to use up some names you really like but you wouldn't actually use for your kids for whatever reason. Our 2 cats are Lila and Mia. Lovely names but a bit too funky for us! And as someone else said, there are a lot of Mias around at the mo! Having said that, the vet receptionist gave a great big sigh when we registered them with the practice. "Lila's nice; but every other new cat we see these days is called Mia!"
ALthough, when I was growing up we lived up the road from a family with both a cat and a kid called Tom ... (the cat came first!)0 -

I pronounce my daughter's name SEH-ren, it's how I read it when I read it in a baby name book. My nan however, insists on calling her se-REN, which drives me mad!!!
People always comment on her name, and ask how it's spelt, and say how unusual it is. The thing is, the week I had her, there were two announcements in our local paper for births, two girls named Seren!! I had never heard the name before I read it in a book, but I have heard of a couple of Serens now, not as uncommon as I thought.Proud to be dealing with my debts0 -
We called our little girl "Shelby" & her middle name is Leah - there's no-one else in her school with her name :-) - Our surname starts with a G0

You've just agreed with what I said, not differed at all.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

ahh i didnt explain myself right lol i have a habit of that!! :rotfl:
no no no what i meant was for the first time it's funny what they attempt but afterwards they usually get it right. people are more perceptive to attempting the correct spelling now more people have less common names
i think if you like a different name you should go for it - it's only a phone call, text message google search or google search away from the correct spelling for most people. If people continue to spell it wrong it's their own ignorance coming through, not a reflection of the name! i don't mean any harm by that comment, it's just what i've found. plus the gaelic names are more and more common these days so names like sinead and niamh are easily recognisable/spelling0 -

A girl I know has just called her baby Seren; never heard of it before until she named her baby it.0 -
My little one (age 2) is Seren too!
Other contenders were Eliza, Scarlett, Eloise, Tabitha and Bryony.0
