I've just published a report on this (but can't tell you where due to forum rules)

I spoke to the Press dept at Lloyds Banking Group who confirmed that the meandmymoney.co.uk site is genuine and is controlled by them.

They also confirmed that the email was sent by their marketing agency in error before the branding and copy was complete.

They apologised for any inconvenience this has caused to their customers and reinforced that they are committed to helping customers prevent phishing attacks.

I'm not totally satisfied with this explanation as it does not clarify why an outside agency had access to their customer email database or why they have sent emails that, whilst not asking you to log on to your account, do ask for significant personal data which can be traced back to an individual.

Whatever the intention, the choice of email as an invitation mechanism was ill advised. They should have sent out a letter.

If anyone finds this report via Google (not that I'm suggesting a particular keyphrase), please feel free to post a link.

I can only concur that this is Another “Giant leap backwards” in phishing prevention ;)

OK, so it is a clumsy, but legit email. Doesn't change the fact that I don't ever recall permitting LloydsTSB to pass on my personal details to a third-party, especially a marketing company. Who knows what they're going to do with the data after this?

Many big organisations use agencies to handle direct mail (inc email) sent to existing customers. In fact the majority of marketing emails you receive are likely to have been sent by an agency on behalf of a client.
  • To find out that this inept e-mail is (a) legit and (b) inspired by my bank makes me madder at bankers than ever before. My internet banking preferences specifically states I do not want e-mail, text or telephone marketing. Now I find out they are handing my details to a 3rd party for "feedback" or as I call it, reverse marketing. Does this (a) breach the banking code and (b) breach the Data Protection Act?

I've asked these precise questions and am awaiting answers from the relevant authorities. Will report back when I hear.

I received the email but I'm not nor ever have been a customer of Lloyds or TSB so it's not their own customer list. It appears the agency used a random list of financial users.
    It's someone else's fault.

I've just had this email today, however the links do not work.

As it used my full name, although suspicious I tried the links but just get a blank page.

I'm a HBOS customer not Lloyds, so I'm guessing it's not just Lloyds TSB that are using this third party

I've edited the links as it wouldn't let me post them.

Well, that’s The Times and Sunday Times informed about this story. Let’s see what happens next.
  • The website (used to) list HBoS & Lloyds TSB so it was targeted at the same organisation. Anyway, the site ***.meandmymoney.co.uk is no longer available this evening (just get a blank page). There is a web page that can be found (if you dig deep enough) in the Lloyds TSB web site based upon the same name and concept.

    This still smells of phishing.......

Lloyds Banking Group consists of: Lloyds TSB, Halifax, Bank of Scotland, C&G, Clerical Medical & Scottish Widows so if you hold an account at any one of these, you're likely to have received an invitation.

It's not phishing, but it is an ill-advised, poorly executed campaign to get customer feedback.

    Poor show.
