Yes, but there's not need to give them any ammunition! A kid with a "normal" name MAY get teased. A kid with a weird/ridiculous name WILL get teased.
God forbid they're also overweight/too thin/spotty/too tall/too short....etc.
Your kids will never thank you for saddling them with a stupid name when they already have so much schoolyard politics to deal with!
I'm sorry I don't agree with you and I do have an unusual name (was the only one in a secondary school of over 2500 pupils) I have never found it to be a problem. I was teased for having glasses yes, and I got teased for the odd other thing at times but my name was never an issue. Fact of life most children will be teased/ bullied during their school years. Some much more than others and having worked with children for over 10 years I can assure you it is not their name that triggers it. Children are experts at spotting a 'chink in someone's armor' and if they spot one they will exploit it to the max, this tends to be a child's reaction to their insults. I am not for one minute suggesting bullying is the fault of the victim, but I do feel that if the bullies get the desired reaction they will carry on however wrong they are. The children who got most bullied in my class at school were all called 'normal' names, and with all the names children have now soon it will be unusual to be called David or Thomas.
There seems to be no real rhyme or reason to bullying and so I say go with the name you love, though I do agree some people take this theory too far (Dweezil Moon Unit- Hmmm!) Ultimately, names are a very individual thing, and just as some people hate modern/ weird/ chav/ unusual names, I would hate my child being one of 5 in their class and having to constantly be called by their first name and initial ie Nicola T, Kirsty G etc.
That said my DD has an unusual name and I did choose it as it can be shortened to a 'normal' name if she wishes in the future, both of which I like.0 -
I like Layton, Sonnie, Jessy, Clayton, Bede, Jude, Dillon and Westley, what do you think of these names my wifey woman doesnt like any of them especially Jessy.
Sorry only Jude makes it for me. It does depend on what goes with your surname ....I came across a Jeremy Emery:eek:
Less common names..........Oscar, Max (Maximillian), Laurie(Laurence), Thiery,Callum, Colm,Noel.0 -
I might just call him Boy.
My brother is called Boy... well not really he is Jason but we all call him Boy because when he was born the mid-wife didn't know what he was going to be called so just wrote Boy on the documentation.
And apparently my dad was Baby for a long time because his name was Gerald Adrian and his parents could agree whether to call him Gerald or Adrian.
My cousins are Bartholemew, Rupert Cornelius, Gideon, Maximilian, Jonathan, Thomas, Matthew, Ashley and Adam.
If I were to have a son he would probably be Thomas - I love that name.Man plans and God laughs...Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. Dont forget that children now go to school with a lot more foreigners then they ever used to so there is now so many 'different' names that our 'different' names aren't going to stand out that much anyway !!Bow Ties ARE cool "Just because you are offended, doesnt mean you are right" Ricky Gervais0

I have to say, with the absolute arguments that went on when we were thinking of a name for DS, I actually got my notepad and pen out last night and jotted down two or three names which I will put forward to OH later...
I joked the other day that we'll still have exactly the same arguments over what to call this LO, only with one less name in the mix!Dealing with my debts!Currently overpaying Virgin cc -balance Jan 2010 @ 1985.65Now @ 703.63

most blokes in the area of Scotland where I live that are named Thomas end up being called Tam, it's quite common, so on one shift at work we have Tam Donnelly, Tam Dempsey and Tam Broon. They never just get 'Tam'
The equivalent these days will be Jack.... never just a first name as there's usually another one in the class.
Interesting that Jack was just the common name for John in the same way that Jake is... yet we think of them as different names these days.
Great thread OP, it certainly shows up the wide difference in people's tastes in names.:D
Ah, that's the beauty of being called Tam when you live in England. It's not at all common here but he has a link to a place where he'll fit in no probs.:)0 -
Dont forget that if you choose a really "unusual" name for your child there is every possibility that the registrar can refuse to register that child under that name. It is their legal right to refuse if they think the name is unreasonable. Not that Im suggesting any of the names on this thread are unreasonable!I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -
I think Julian is a lovely name... though I have an ex by that name and though we are still good friends I don't think it would be appropriate.
And Westley is great... (the name of the gorgeous Carey Elwes as the Dread Pirate Roberts) Aaaaaaaas Yoooooooou Wiiiiiiiiiiiiish.....Man plans and God laughs...Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry.
