You can go the pure PAYG route, or the 'goodybag' route.

payg - put £10 on your phone to active the sim card, then it's 8pence per minute to any land line or mobile, 4p per text and free internet until the end of September. (after which, for a low user it'll be under 20p a day - but if you don't use internet at all, that's not an issue!)

goodybags - these are currently half price for July. The £10 goodybag (currently £5!) costs you £10, then for this £10 you get 100 minutes to any network, unlimited texts and unlimited internet use (which is TRULY unlimited.) For £15 (currently £7.50!) you get 300 minutes and unlimited internet and texts.

You can port your number in and out as you see fit, so there's no long term commitments. Also, just by chatting in their forum, asking questions etc you earn money you can get as payback (either as 'cash' to paypal or as credit.) By doing a small amount, I've earned in the region of £25 per month!

Just got my sim too and only drawback I can see is that the goodybag credit only lasts a month. Do you know if I can buy a goodybag this month then go to payg??

Goodybags are like payg bolt ons, you buy them when you want them, the minutes last for a month and you can't buy another til the active one expires. As Zanityman said all £10 and above goodybags are half price atm and they have an unlimited calls/texts/data bag for £35, currently £17.50 If you don't want to buy one you will be charged the payg rates calls 8ppm, texts 4p, free data without a bag til Oct

Giffgaff is payg only but also offer bundles ie £10 for 100 mins/£15 for 300 mins (usually £8/£24 which also includes unlimited texts/data).

Credit doesn't expire unless the phone is not used at all for a 6 month period like other payg networks. Goodybags expire one month after purchase.

They also provide call waiting and call diversion which is not usually available on most payg networks

Would a giffgaff sim work in a mobile broadband dongle?

Yes, I think it would work, but you would be in breach of their internet usage terms as it states explicitly on their pricing page that internet is for personal use only and excludes PC use or tethering. So they may charged for the data used or termination the sim due to abuse.

Be very careful before you switch to giffgaff. Firstly, sending MMS texts are NOT included in the Goodybags....you have to buy credit on top. So much for the 'unlimited' texts......On O2 for instance one sent MMS reduces your balance by 4 texts.....I was caught out by this as I was attracted to them by the 'half-price' goodybags with the unlimited text deal-and it certainly doesn't make it clear on the website that MMS are not included..

It also isn't at all clear how long the bought credit lasts for. Goodybags expire after 30 days...but other credit??

Potential customers should also be aware that any help or customer support that may be needed is via the web only, by using their online 'community' or forum.....There is no telephone number to call for help or support- This helps to keep costs down no doubt, but if you experience difficulty in switching to them or have problems with the service or network then help may not be the easiest or quickest thing to come by......

MMS=SMS on o2 is being phased out so no new or upgrading customers can get that

gg mms is the cheapest rate as far as i know at 16p

goodybags only last 1 month but credit does not expire unless no chargeable activity occurs in 6 months then you lose the number, the same as most payg providers

gerenal help and support is provided by other forums users but for faults/billing more complex issues you can email a staff member

personally I'd had nothing but good service from gg

    Hi all.

I've just ordered a giff gaff sim. I'm currently on o2 payg.
Am i right in thinking i do not have to get my hand set unlocked as giff gaff piggy back off o2. And the obvious question are they as good as they are making out for £10 i get 100mins and unlimited texts. Also on my o2 genie sim i get 300 texts a month then my £10 gets whittled down 10p per text so i don't have to top up for at least another 2 weeks [yes I'm a light user]With Giff gaff is it the same or do i have to top up after the month is up.
    Regards.
