To be honest as long as you dont tether it's a good deal on giffgaff. Would they actually catch you if you just tethered to do low download stuff?

Three plans with All You Can Eat Data allow tethering. You can either have The One Plan on Contract (£25 a month) or top-up £15 a month on PAYG and buy the All-In-One 15 for 300 mins, 3000 texts and All You Can Eat data.

Note that you're not supposed to tether on packages/add ons without All You Can Eat data

Although they have suspended data for people who have gone mad with it and downloaded lots (20Gb+?) data so it isn't as unlimited as they say it is. Most people won't get near that with their phones which is probably how they get away with saying unlimited - it's up to you when this happens to prove you weren't tethering.

Three however on their unlimited plans are unlimited - I saw a blog post about someone who got to 46Gb on Three (including tethering).

The guy on giffgaff had his data connection blocked, not because he had exceeded any limit but because he had used it in a way that broke GiffGaff T&C. He was basically using his mobile as a substitute for home broadband, to download files for use on his PC and thus was not using it for personal mobile consumption. Whether the stuff he was downloading was legit or not is another matter, and if illegal would have broken T&Cs anyway. His block would have been lifted if he was able to explain his activities, but he was not forthcoming. Sounds all a bit shady to me. You could probably have streamed iPlayer all day on your phone and probably wouldn't have been blocked as long as you could justify it and it didn't affect the network for other users.

I doubt GiffGaff would take action on those that tether for occasional use. Its only those that take the mick and allow themselves to stick out like a sore thumb, as in this case of 20GB of mobile data which has caused them to investigate further.

In the case of Three, they are expecting PC usage and therefore wouldn't be monitoring your usage as closely.

go to the Gg forums and you will see many complaining about tech issues as they can't use the web. today they had to take access to the web down. its full of tech issues lately that network. there are lots of spam messages on here with this network which i take for caution as nothing to good to be true. 3 in my opinion for heavy data useage is the best for reliability and volume. they have an eat all you can data on pay and go which you can buy as an add on.

Secondly if you are a low or medium data user vectone mobile has a 1gb allowance package for five quid a month. you do get a free daily allowance too which gg use to have.

gg is suitable economically for inclusive texts minutes and data if you use quite a bit but they do bar users whom take the michael with data. they send excessive warning messages out to your phone and email you warning if you are taking the michael to reduce it. if not they do but users off. unless you can convince them you where not tethering. to be honest with you o2 3g can be really hit and miss. i don't like the format of gg too seems to be lot of spam around with them as users are recruiting all over the show. just take all things into mind all i say.
  • You're quite right on some aspects tony077844, there is a lot of spammers around who are just in it to make as much £ as possible but personally I've had nothing but good experiences with giffgaff.
I was stuck on a £35/month contract for 18mths which was nearing expiry. I bought a HTC Desire outright from a fella on Gumtree, who waited 8mths then claimed the insurance as stolen and had it IMEI blocked! For a while I had no idea why it was even blocked until I contacted giffgaff, they helped me work out who blocked it etc and were really helpful!
So I’ve went from £35 to £10 per month and get 250mins, unltd txts and unltd data, awesome! (although the £300 on the Desire was lost :()

I would highly recommend them as a network though, good unique forum interface and customer service, runs off the O2 network (I have no coverage issues at all in and around Glasgow) I took my number with me and the 'O2 customer retention team' gave me the scaremongering chat of "well, giffgaff get lesser priority on our network" etc, this is not the case at all! And there nearest comparible package was £10.50 more and only had 500mb data.

It really was quite liberating leaving O2 after 6yrs custom on various >£30 contracts to now be on £10/month! I'm well chuffed.

But at the end of the day it is a new network which promises cheaper rates, opening the market to more competition. If they have a few teething problems along the way then lets not be too quick to dismiss them... Companies like this force the larger networks to review their setup and keep the market alive with choice... which is never a bad thing.

I for one as a satisfied GiffGaff customer would recommend them .
Only to happy to allow a new user to join through me as they get a £5 bonus on first top up .So what if i also get a bonus for the introduction . Spamming the forum dont agree with that at all unless its in a stickie devoted to users links as agreed by the moderators .

This is true and has been a notified service problem since 5.4.11.
Looks like a major problem has arisen with the new billing system for data .

    5-4-11 Service Update
We are aware there are issues with the data traffic on our network. Some people are having a problems with Slow Data Speeds throughout the UK which we’re trying to fix now.

We are working together with O2 to try and fix this.

The impact of this is that giffgaff customers are experiencing slow data speeds when trying to connect to GPRS

We will keep you updated with any extra information we can get.

I visit this forum quite often and I often see GiffGaff mentioned but I do not perceive it as spam. I learnt about GiffGaff here and I am happy that I did. I also recommend GiffGaff quite often here because I think it is a good option. How is it a spam that many people are happy with a pay as you go service and recommend it on a mobile phone forum?
Now regarding the data, there are some times when GiffGaff mobile internet does not work for hours, without any reason, so I think it is not 100% reliable. However, i still prefer it to a contract.

The thing that bothers people is that many posters place a halo around GiffGaff and their service when their own official forum paints quite a different picture - I'm all for saving money and good value however its nice to have facts too like you have just posted regarding internet connection - That way people can make an informed choice rather than just go with GiffGaff so someone can get 500 refferal points!
