Are slow cookers worth it?

I've been reading through alot of the threads on here, you all have such fab ideas for inexpensive meals, I'm going to start planning for next week in a bit.

I dont have a slow cooker, but am thinking of investing, is a basic model as good as the more expensive ones?

I will hopefully be returning to work soon (after 7 years at home looking after kids  ) & it would be handy to be able to pop some things in before I go to work & come home to a cooked meal.

Also, are they safe? I'm a bit unsure about leaving things switched on while i'm out of the house.

Definately!! Mine gets used at least once a week. I've got a basic one with 3 settings high, low and auto. Aso long as you check the crock pot bit is ok in a dishwasher I can't see why you'd need anything fancy. There's one for £8.99 on argos at the mo...HTH

I've got the argos one and it's great, though I only use it in winter and not as often as I should but OH doesn't like stews and casseroles, but if I transfer the stew/casserole into a pie dish and put some pastry on the top, he'll eat it lol

So apart from the obvious (stews and casseroles), what else could I use one for?

    Currently thinking about getting one.....

If you're busy you can put in frozen chicken joints, frozen veg etc some stock and when you come home you have a lovely casserole with absolutely no hassle what so ever! :D

This sounds like the ideal answer to feeding DS1 when he's back from school before I get back from work.....

    That's very nearly clinched it.
