Couch to 5k Running - Part Three

This morning I've completed my first week 9 run 1. In response to people asking how do you go from 1 minute to 30 minute runs..........I have no idea - BUT IT WORKS!!!!!!
I've got two runs left, I've not reached 5k yet but I will work on that - touch wood, I'll get it before Xmas, I'm not too far off.
I've also download the c25k+ podcasts! has anybody tried these?
Great work tinofpeas - ideally I would like to do week 9 another two times in a row and then move on to c25k + to see what that's all about.
I have been out this evening, only ran 15 minutes walked for five and then ran another five. Pretty much as soon as I set off it started to rain and by the time I got to the point at which I was the farthest away from home it started absolutely bucketing down. I ended up just having a bit of fun trying to run fast to get back home asap rather than making it a chore to do the distance.
Still quite a disappointment that I haven't quite got this nailed.Mortgage

Week 1 is complete!!
I love being able to look at my stats - the amount I've improved in 3 runs is amazing, I've run further and cut time off my average mile. My recovery time was much shorter this time.
I think I could have managed week 2 run 1 today actually, but I definitely feel ready for it on Sunday0 -

What is your next aim now you have finished?
I can't do the 30 minutes all that fast at the moment, so I'm trying to build up to be able to complete the 30 minutes faster and at some point I'll see whether I'm making the full 5km and in what time. Just found out in this thread that there's a Couch to 5K+ plan, so I might have a look and see if I want to do that in spring (not starting it now!), but it'll depend on how long the runs in that are and whether I'd be able to give up the extra time.
The breathing tip is that you begin from when one foot hits the floor and inhale deeply for four steps, then exhale for four steps (or you could do it over three or two steps if you can't manage four). I found it helps me to breathe properly, and not get panicky because I'm getting breathless which would then cause me to get even more breathless, and so I can go on longer. It says to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, but if you can't do that then I'm sure you could just breath through your mouth in the same way and it'd still help, as long as you make sure you're taking big deep breaths.
Kiwisaver - try not to let it get to you. You did it once so you can definitely do it again, it could simply be the weather was too hot for running so much and once it cools off you'll be able to do more.
Gonzo - good luck for week 2!0 -
Determined as a determined thing today; not only did I go out running in the blooming rain, I went out running in the rain just after having returning home from the hairdressers.
Good thing about the rain is it keeps everyone else away from the park and I felt really free and easy to run at my own pace without any performance pressures or getting in anyone's way. Ordinarily I get a bit ashamed of passing the same people time after time and sometimes go out of my way to run faster to avoid a bunch of louts or nosy dogs.
It was my best run ever, it felt really good and I was so determined and had absolutely no excuses not to run the full thirty minutes. I got to 25 with reasonably little trouble and thought then that I could probably carry on and run for longer but instead I just went faster than usual and then 'sprinted' as fast as I possibly could for the last 60 seconds and jumped over a big stick.
It felt like I won the Olympics - just fantastic!! :T I was so happy, springing along on my cool down walk, wet through and swinging my arms and clapping my hands like a crazy thing.Mortgage

Well done Kiwi . Now you need to print out that last post, pin it on your wall and whenever you start thinking you can't run for 30 minutes just read it again.
I've still not been for a run in the rain. Don't know if I'm brave enough!! Forecast looks good for tomorrow morning for my next run.0 -
Going for a jog tomorrow with DP. Hoping it will be a good one. Was meant to go today but Hoover packed in so had to go in search of a new 1 and put up the Christmas decs before DD got home (wouldn't normally put decs up this early but the elf that comes to stay has installed a door for ease of access and it would have looked out of place on its own

Hope your run goes well today Louise. I've just got back from mine. Perfect running weather here again, I've been very lucky. Every Sunday morning has been dry so far. Don't know how I'll cope heading out on a rainy morning.0

Wow - I came on this board to find some sort of running support thread before finding this - which is exactly what I'm doing. Didn't realise how popular the C25K actually was!
So, I did my 2nd run of the first week today (did the first on Friday).
I'm so happy to read what people are saying about not believing they could ever run for 30 mins but eventually getting there. At the moment I'm only just able to run for the minute and that's quite a struggle.
Is anyone else doing this entirely at a gym/on a treadmill rather than outdoors? I can't bear the thought of running outside in the cold (and...I'd look ridiculous!).
Also, anyone doing this with quite a lot of weight to lose? I'm not just unfit...I'm back at a size 18 after going from an 18 to an 8-10 around 3-ish yrs ago (in a very unhealthy manner).
Got some questions which I'm hoping someone will be able to help with (sorry if they've already been asked here!):
I'm planning on doing more than the 3 sessions a week - hoping 4-5 but would even do up to 7 if I can. I'm not planning on cramming the 9 week schedule into half the time though - still want to stick with 9 weeks (or more!). I'm guessing this is ok? Obviously if I'm in pain or need a rest, I'll listen to what my body is telling me but apart from that, the more days the better I'm hoping!
And...anyone who also does this on a treadmill - what speeds are you walking/running at? I start walking at 5.5kph and running at 7kph but have ended up dropping this to 5kph/6.5kph after around 15 mins.
Any tips would be welcome - total newbie to this so need all the help I can get.0
