Couch to 5k Running - Part Three

Kiwi, having read your story for the start this summer, I can't tell you how much your tenacity has inspired me. So please don't be down on yourself.
I think your upside down timetable this week is always going to happen sometimes, so how you handle it will reflect how you can handle it in the future. I know I will have upside down weeks and weeks where I am a little too poorly to run.
I would just keep repeating the week 6 runs (presuming they are the one before the 25 mins) until you get over this hurdle and feel stronger. That is still getting out there and exercising far more than you used and building stamina in your body. I know finishing the course is a wonderful end goal, but some of us will take longer than the 9 weeks and that is just how our bodies are. If you read the NHS c25k forum, there are a number of people there who have take longer than the 9 weeks.I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0 -
Hi everyone
I keep thinking about starting this C25K as something else other than bootcamp... and it's free! It's going to sound silly but I'm really self-conscious out and about which is my biggest hurdle to actually getting out and doing it!
How do you overcome this?

Or do you mean you run in the middle of nowhere so the map just doesn't cover the area?
I run in the streets around the area where I live, so not the middle of nowhere, but when I tried to plan out the route I like to use some of the streets aren't on their map. They're not newly built streets at all so it isn't that, it's sort of like parts of the map aren't detailed enough to show where I go and only show the more main roads IYSWIM.
I might see if I can pay into the gym as a one-off or get a try-out session at some point, use a treadmill there and see how far I'm going in the 30 minutes.
Does anyone else find if they run in residential streets in the evening they can smell all the dinners cooking? It drives me mad at times! Might be foolish of me, but I always go past a chip shop near the end as well, I don't go in but I do have a good sniff by there as a sort of reward!
Psychopathbabble - Er, I sort of just think "Sod them!" and try to pay no attention to anyone I see. You're gone in a few seconds anyway. If it's someone not exercising, at least you're trying to get in good shape, so better than they are. If it's another runner who is better than you, they had to start somewhere too!
I was a tad embarrassed when a work colleague said she'd seen me as she went by in the car though, but she wasn't laughing at me or anything. Most people won't do and if anyone says anything you just ignore them because you're CLEARLY fabulous.0 -
A, I understand - how annoying, because it is good to know isn't it. Perhaps I will find the same issue when I try some of our smaller roads - I'm saving them for the first 20 minute run to create lots of variety! ROFL re chippie - it gave me instant visions of some sort of apocalyptic 'walking dead type' runners sniffing outside the chippie.
Psycopathbubbl - I think I am quite lucky, having reached a certain age, mumble mumble, to my surprise I don't seem to care very much, knowing I am unlikely to see loads of people I know and it is very common to see people out running round here. Having said that, I bumped into friends walking their dog on my 3rd run and despite their well disguised astonishment (they've known me 25+ years and never seem e walk beyond amble pace) were very impressed.
Oh, and well done HBS - a week 7er...I am not worthyI try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0 -
How does everyone else know how far they've run for? I tried MapMyRun, but got in a strop with it because the routes I use aren't on it, so that's no good.
I've been using MapMyRun for the last few weeks and I just set it to record the route I take as I go along. I usually don't know where I'll end up before I set off. I select RECORD and wait till it gets a gps signal then press START and it measures my route as I go along. When I get home I can go online for a detailed record of how fast I was going at any point and it also shows any uphills and downhills. It shouts to tell you whenever you finish a kilometre and how long it took.0 -
Hi all, just done another 5k on the treadmill, makes it easier now it's so dark so early! Don't have to worry about scaring anyone
Keep going peeps, doesn't matter how long it takes you will get there in the end. I don't run 5k in 30 mins, takes me about 45 but any jogging is better than none!

Come on psychopathbabble, you can do it!
I read in an article somewhere that to do ANYTHING you just need 20 seconds of courage. It was those 20 seconds that got me started on my first run...and once I'd started, I've now got to finish! It was also those 20 seconds that made me walk into the free-weights section at the gym and pick up a barbell.
20 seconds will get you started. You CAN.
(Incidentally, last run of week 7 tonight. I decided to randomly jog last night too as I couldn't get on the dumbbells and managed 20 minutes)
ETA: Week 7 FINISHED!!

I decided to go back to Week 7 today and told the nasty little negative voices in my head to !!!!!!; my plan was just to run for as long as I possibly could with no pressure to finish. So here I am claiming Week 7 FINISHED too!
I followed a technique I read about on another forum which suggested counting backwards from 100 to take your mind off of the task and distance ahead - worked a treat!Mortgage
Start January 2017: $268,012
Latest balance $266,734
Reduction: $1,278.450 -
Yay well done Kiwisaver!
I find I get tense so I throw a few punches or circle my shoulders, that helps take my mind off my legs too haha
