I've just done week 1, run 1. Started again as I've been out of it for 6 weeks and didn't think I could do any more!!

It was ok though and feel great for doing it.

Lucyadams183 - I do mine at the gym, I'm a bit self conscious of doing it outside... maybe one day!
  • Peeps in...I've just done run 1/week2. I love doing it outside but maybe I'm lucky where I live and it is normal to see allsorts out and about on the promenade.
I've read the thread from June to now to see how all the current posters started /are doing.
I too think if I can do it anyone can as I am so unfit and have never ever seen the appeal in running before.
    I also can't believe I will manage 3 minutes let alone 20 in a few weeks:rotfl:.
However, I trust the process and will take it one run at a time. I really really want to get fitter and lose a bit of weight.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once
  • Brighton belle, if you'd told me five weeks ago I could run for 20 minutes I'd have laughed in your face...

...but I did! And trying for 25 minutes tonight!

Thanks HBS. That's what I am serious hanging onto - I hope to be the saying the same thing to a newbie in 5 weeks time :D

    Good luck for tonight!

  • Been doing 5k for about 7 weeks. I'd never ran more than 50 yards previous to this and never thought I would enjoy it. The first couple of weeks a practically walked for half of it and hated it but determination got me through. I absolutely love running now and done my best time this morning of 28:57. I find going a steady pace and then increase your pace as you get nearer home to better your time, the next time increase your pace a bit further away from the finish and so on... I'm hoping by Christmas to do the 5k in 20 minutes.... We shall see!
The only thing that worries me is the weather, I'm not going out in the rain and snow so would be interested to know what you all think about treadmills?
Are they a good substitution and how much would I need to spend? I've had a cheap one in the past (when I wasn't into running though) and didn't like it.

I go out 5:30 in the morning so no one can see me!
  • I do mine on the treadmill at the gym as I don't want to be out alone in the dark! :)

    AND...Week 6, Run 3 DONE. 25 minutes. Admittedly, slowly - 6km/h average - but I FREAKIN' DID IT! :D:D

I'm thinking of joining a gym to do this. I don't fancy doing it outside because of people looking at me. I've been doing some exercise at home so I am hopeful that it will give me a bit of a head start. I am aiming to do a 5 k run next year so by starting now I should be ready.

I felt the same as you and started off in the gym but I've been running outside the last few weekends and nobody has looked at me. Mostly quite early on a Sunday morning though so only really people out walking their dogs and other joggers.

I'm 50 years old and never run before, not even at school, so if I can do it anyone can :).
