iPhone '4' thread

Does anyone know if the iphone 4 on tesco are sim locked? I am hoping not but think they maybe.
Can anyone confirm?0 -
Apparently they were on their old models, but they would take O2 cards too, as Tesco are effectively piggy backing on O2. Not sure if this is the case with the new phones, but it wouldn't surprise me if it is. The only way to check this though is with another micro sim so don't know if anyone has tried it yet.

Apple later released a more detailed announcement which said; "avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases". In other words "you're to blame, just don't hold it that way". So basically if you're left-handed you're screwed. Even if you're right-handed, think about how often you switch your phone to your left hand so you can use your right hand to do something like carry a bag or write down a message. The iPhone is slippery enough as it is without having to hold it with your fingertips to ensure you don't lose your signal.
Jobs' response is typical of the way Apple fanboys respond to all criticism - "The product is perfect, if you're not happy with it then the fault lies with you".[/QUOTE]
Surely despite all this they'll be sorting it out for the next batch of phones? Or would that be admitting that there was a fault with the initial batch, and hence result in a recall?0 -
The current theory is that the antenna is supposed to be coated with a material to prevent any shorting by fingers/sweat etc and there has been a batch sent out where this was missed or not applied properly. This has seemingly been confirmed by an Apple CSR although this was said to someone over the phone, they could have made it up.
Given that some people have absolutely no problem holding their phones whilst touching this area and others completely lose signal it is a plausible explanation. It also makes sense that Apple would apply something like this, it just seems that to not do this would be a glaringly obvious omission.
If this is indeed the case then handing out free bumpers won't cut it, at least for me.
Maybe I am thinking a little too far ahead, but these phones will be effectively worthless when it comes to selling them on, nobody is going to want to buy one that requires a case to function properly. Especially given that the second hand market will be predominantly filled by "fixed" ones.
This all makes me very glad that I didn't queue yesterday0 -
Wow... just wow...
I've always been holding the iphone with the palm at the lower left and fingers at upper right... Thus never noticing the problem.. and it's still comfortable..
I do think the issue has been blown out of proportion... As long as you dont cover the entire bottom half of the phone in your hand you still get signal so really, is it THAT much of a problem?nah.

It doesn't seem to affect every iPhone 4 out there so I am not sure denial will work here.
Assuming the coating theory is true Apple have 2 choices, tighten up the QA to ensure batches without the coating don't end up going out to the public, which will make it impossible for Apple to deny a manufacturing fault (all affected users will need to do is walk into an Apple store with their phone, replicate the issue on thir phone then attempt and fail to replicate it on a display model, they won't be able to deny a fault.). The other option would be to stop the coating being applied to all future phones being produced so that they can claim that there is no fault. This is however a blatantly stupid idea. The damage to sales of the iPhone 4 would be considerable, as will investor confidence and peoples faith in the iPhone brand for a long time to come. It will be far more costly to Apple than giving affected users a 10p piece of rubber or replacing the handsets for those customers who won't be fobbed off by a band aid fix.0 -

I think the fact that Apple for the first time decided to make its own case tells you all you need to know about this. The company has previously left that up to third-party manufacturers.TESCO EVERY LITTLE change to the t&cs HELPS0 -
Trying to get through to Tesco to buy it over the phone, line is constantly engaged. Anyone managed to get through yet? Is their system back up yet?0

I believe it is. I have been monitoring another website's forum and two people have completed their orders and another is been in the queue for 20 mins.
Apparently people have been trying since 7.45am.
I can't get through myself yet so will keep plugging away.0 -
This puts it into context I think
