I'm under contract with Tesco's for my 3gs until next April. A couple of weeks ago hubby dropped said phone down the toilet (RIP)....... he was going to buy me a replacement iPhone 4. Spoke to Tesco's customer services today who said that they could not transfer my contract to the micro-sim needed, if I wanted the iPhone 4 I would have to buy out my current contract (£180) and take out a new one!!!!! Now I don't know whether to just get the iPhone 4 and try to hack up my sim card, or go out and buy a 16gb 3gs in the next couple of days........... help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are many guides online on how to cut a sim into a micro sim, there are also sim cutters (like a hole punch but for sims), on the the 'bay.

Orange have the same policy, no m-sim unless you buy the 4 from them !

Brilliant - thank you sooooooooo much! Was a bit dubious about taking a pair of scissors or a carving knife to the phone. Will definitely invest in a sim cutter and pre-order off Apple sim free from 14th July.........

I know what you are being told but I don't think it's correct. If you lost any phone, you would not be obliged to take out a new contract or pay up existing contract if you replaced the phone yourself (at your expense). Sure, you wouldn't be entitled to a discounted/subsidised phone but you'd be free to buy any phone yourself. I think the Tesco advisers you are misinformed.

How many people lose their phone, get a new one with a replacement sim and reconnect? Happens all the time. The only difference is the fact it's a micro sim card rather than a normal sized sim card.

Rather than trying to cut the sim card yourself (yes I know people keep saying it can be done but it's still not advisable), why not try and get a O2 micro sim card this week, keep the card in the normal sized sim and go online to O2 and see if you can transfer the sim over. Tesco and O2 are the same network. It may not work but that would be the first thing I would try.

The next thing would be to do the same but call up Tesco and ask them to do the swap. If that doesn't work, complain to Tesco and demand a new replacement sim.

Then, and only then, I'd consider cutting the card up. I wouldn't buy a 3GS now. In fact, I'd rather buy myself out of the contract and get a discounted phone on a new contract (hubby should pay!)

Like I say, I'm pretty sure the Tesco adviser is misinformed. They haven't even announced the date or prices for the iPhone4 so they probably haven't even had the training about swapping over sims etc.

i am thinking of the following once my vodafone contract ends in 2 weeks, so please advise me if i could do better:

buy a 16Gb iphone from apple for £500
then buy sim only from vodafone for £20/month for 12 months (getting £100 cashback from quidco) giving me 600 min and 1GB data
Total for 12 months after cashback is £640

    !!!!!

Looks the best deal out there at the moment.... However i was looking at a contract from vodafone.

Vodafone seem the best because of their data allowance

OH DEAR! No 02 phones for non-existing customers

Does anyone have a view on whether Vodafone are likely to follow suit?

I dont think that is entirely true, I called Orange the other day, ordered a Micro-SIM and they told me 3-5 days! I will call to confirm soon!

I don't think there's much margin in the iPhone 4 for the networks. The cost of the handset is already high so if they subsidise it a lot then the price plans need to be higher. That probably explains why the the networks (so far) have very similar prices.

3 might go down the route of lower or more inclusive tariffs but perhaps a more expensive handset.
