I pay NIE a monthly dd, could I move to Airtricity? How long does it take to move from NIE to Airtricity?

Why does NIE read my meter every quarter but not read my neighbours meter every quarter?

NIE likes to waste money by employing people to read meters quarterly. If they don't read your neighbour's so regularly it's probably because the meter is inside the premises and there's nobody in when the meter reader calls.
I don't think Airtricity will be doing regular quarterly readings.

  • That will explain why NIE left one of their blue cards for me to read the meter last time. I ignored it as I'd switched over - thought it was a mistake - but I gave the reading to airtricity anyway and my bill didn't seem to be an estimate.

As far as I'm aware, Airtricity use the same meter readers as NIE, who are, or were, outsourced to a third party anyway.

Yes, I saw that but which hours are classed as night and which are classed as day
  • My mate reads electric meters and is employed by the NIE networks business which is separated from NIE ES (Energy Supply). The NIE networks business is currently being bought over by the ESB networks business and will no longer be aligned to the Viridian group, the readers read meters for all suppliers and NIE networks pass the reads on to suppliers. The regulator sees this as a more efficient set up as opposed to numerous meter reading companies and duplication of effort and costs to the NI customers. All meter readers will be redundant once Smart Metering is rolled out. My GB friends envy our reading service as on the mainland it is an absolute nightmare.

Yes, you can move to airtricity, takes approx 2 weeks.

If your owed money, you will get it back.
if you owe NIE money, they continue to the monthly DD until paid up.

Just a warning , if you pay NIE £60 a month, and you owe them money, moving to airtricity, you will also paying off NIE £60 along with airtricity money as well.

Why does NIE read my meter every quarter but not read my neighbours meter every quarter?
They may have a different meter /payment method.
