in fact you could place it on Amazon market place right this second while Sleeping Beauty is still in print and make £8 - £10 ...lowest asking for is £12.96 second hand:) amazon themselves are selling for £16.47
And how much is it on vhs? Remember things are only worth what people are prepared to pay and there is no way i would be prepared to pay that for that.
    one of the famous 5:kiss:
  • Really upsets me im sitting with over 600 dvds that now need a home as they really do take up way to much room.... they have all been looked after extremely well ..... to find out that you are going to get stung.... think i must have spend a couple of grand on them to be offered pennies by a company that clearly is going to make a large return on them

You're really missing the point here.

    1. You saw a DVD and thought "I want that"
    2. You saw the price (£15 or whatever) and thought "I'll get £15 worth of pleasure from watching that disk)
    3. You watched the disk (repeatedly?)

    Time passed

    4. You have had as much enjoyment from your disks as you're going to, and want to get rid of them, ideally putting some coin in your pocket as you do so.

    5. You discover the resale 'value' of your disks, which you have cherished, is lower than you expected.

If a company wants to turn a profit, and make a business from people selling their disks, you can't blame them, just because the disks cost you £15 each doesn't mean they are worth that 2nd hand, especially not to someone that has to clean, sort, resell etc..

Personally, if I was offered so little for them, I'd probably give to freecycle so someone else could enjoy them (indeed I have given several hundred DVDs away this way)

I've no idea how much it is on VHS but then people aren't going to pay a premium for a VHS tape. The more you use them the more they wear out.

Obviously you are correct that things are only worth what people are willing to pay and while you wouldn't pay that much for a second hand DVD, there are people that will. It all depends on the title, so with a Disney classic you know it's worth more because firstly it goes out-of-print at some point guaranteed and there is no guarantee of another edition. Then most people who have bought the DVD usually don't want to sell. That's why you don't usually see Disney DVDs going as cheap as most others, Disney artificially keep the prices high. Whereas your average Blockbuster, let's say Transformers, will sell like hot cakes and the price keeps coming down and coming down and people selling theirs and they are worth next to nothing.

I've just took a quick look on Ebay and with a couple of minutes to go 101 Dalmatians is going for £10.25 and roughly half-an-hour to go on the Lion King two has a bidder of £24.99, the Jungle Book has bids up to £11.55 with 32 minutes to go, walt Disney's Robin Hood has about half-an-hour to go and is currently £7.22, Pinocchio £7.50, peter pan £10.51... All used DVDs.
  • How do music magpie dispose of their purchases ? I'd like to know what they get for them. I see they also buy mobile phones....what a handy company to know about just in case you become skint and desperate!

How do MM make there money?
What do they do to the CDs/DvDs afterwards?

    Many thanks.

music magpie is non other than amazon / play.com seller

    "Zoverstocks"

so as you can see they sell them on and always beat the price of rival sellers, and thats the reason they can sell low as they only pay 30 pence for good quality stock. (poor quality is kept atnil cost) and i bet sold on.

a usefull fact to know zoverstocks will reduce and reduce to less than a £1 on play.com and down to 1 pence on Amazon, so don't be tempted to lower and lower your prices, unless you fancy a sneaky purchase.
