I've been with tiscali for a number of years - decided at end of February to downgrade to the £15.99/month 5x package for purely financial reasons, rang up to do this since there are several email accounts and I didn't know which one was the main one.
The 1mb option wasn't available then, but I checked every few days and changed it online last week - £15.99/month 1mb capped at 2gb. I'm keeping tabs on how much I use, but seems to be okay so far, £1.50 for each additional 1mb.
It's made a real difference to how fast pages load up. I'm using a 6 years old pc and the internet speed has improved its performance no end.

It seems to be the way forward to actually call them doesn't it?
I am stuck with 256kbps at 15.99. There are a couple of people here who have the 2gb capped 1mbs for 15.99 rate and everyone else is on 512kbps for 15.99. Did you CALL them? I have been told that unless i want to upgrade to 512 for 17.99 i'm stuck because "1mb is not available due to technical contraints" I have actually checked the rating of my line with one of the links on this thread and from that it would appear tiscali are correct for the time being, but if some people are on 1mbs for 15.99 would it kill them to give me 512kbps for same price?

Quiz....what i meant was that if you "migrate" ISP, ie ask another ISP to take over the ADSL they only charge you say 10-15 quid, the "set up, or connection fee" of between 50-80 quid (depending on ISP) ia waived. But Tiscali do not support migration, so if i want to move i have to cancel tiscali, who then remove the ADSL from my line and then sign up with a new one who then reactivate it, and this is what the bigger charge is for.
So, if i move i will have to pay the larger charge!

I called them to

a) change the account name to mine (continuing same account), I could have done this online but wasn't sure of primary email account.
b) downgrade to 5x to save money. This was beginning of March and the 1gb wasn't then available in my area. I was aware there was upgrading going on and kept checking the website. I upgraded to 1mbp about a week later, same price, huge difference in speed.

Having said that, just checked now on tiscali website if my number is compatible with 1mbp and it's telling me it isn't! I know thats what I'm on because have checked with those sites mentioned earlier plus pages downloading at fast rate. I'd say try upgrading online, see what happens.

Logged into tiscali again to changing package area - informs me
"Current Product: 1Mb - £15.99 per month 2GB cap"

and gives me 5 or so other options to choose from. Yet the gubbins that checks if my telephone line is suitable for Mb tells me it isn't.

As far as I know, if you leave Tiscali first, wait for the line to be shut down, before ordering another broadband service there should be no set-up charge. AOL certainly didn't leave me with that impression.

Go to upgrade your BB package and you'll see 512k at £15.99 - like i just have

cheers for that gypsy, i will try again, but i have tried that method about 5 times, trying to get to the same page from different routes to try and fool it! :-)
Every time i go there, i just get
upgrades available:
256kbps 15.99 (which is what i'm on, so how can i upgrade to it??)
512kbps 17.99
still, as you say, i'll try and try again!!

Strange.. i went from 256k to 1mb capped and then back down to 512k at £15.99 so maybe it's dependant on the package you're on

Hi. After reading about the upgrade options now showing, I had a look and saw the option to go to 512 at £15.99, ie no increase in cost..Followed this through and 24 hours later it has happened with no problem. I have done the speed check and all is ok.

I know Tiscali get a lot of adverse comments and can be a bit frustrating but I have gone from 3X to 10X dialup speed in a month, no increase in charges. Good enough for me!!!!!

i am, never had a problem apart from not being able to get 1mb but i just downgraded.
