They say because USA & Australia are not chip & pin the transaction will not be accepted.
Are all credit cards faced with these terms? What on earth do we have credit cards for?
No, credit cards have a magnetic stripe on the back so you can use them in places that do not have Chip and PIN.

My C&P Nationwide card was even used successfully in one of those old carbon-copy machines abroad recently.
  • Thank you King of Fools. Am I right in assuming that it is Cahoot who causing this problem. If so then they're blocking the card use in half the world. Do any other banks follow this practice and do any of them also have limits on a single transaction?

I cannot say if Cahoot are alone in this but I have never come across it with any of the cards I have had (Halifax, Nationwide, Tesco, Virgin, Amex, etc.)

Some cards will flag up large transactions that could look suspicious, especially in known fraud hotspots. Therefore, it is worth letting your card company know if you are planning on making any such transactions so they will not block them.
  • I thought it odd but I checked about three times and the last reply I quoted on the forum in my query. I did notify them of my intentions prior to the last reply from them. I'm going to sign up with some other card. It's a pity that their practice can't be broadcast!!!!

  • We have just returned from a week in Bacelona. I had my handbag stolen, and my husband his wallet. I thought my Halifax was a visa card and the police helped me to report it stolen as I had thought. Having checked on our return it was a Mastercard and over £2,000 had been stolen plus more. The card company said that the pin had been used. How could this have happened when I had nothing of the pin even written in my diary which had also been taken?

The easiest way is just to watch you entering the pin first and then steal your cards later.

    Cheers, Des.
  • It's an awful feeling when that happens. If your pin was used then there's a possibility of a camera taking a shot of your key presses, perhaps on a rigged ATM. Until the actual keypad system is made secure it will continue to happen. Usually in the UK it happens with some on line deals ,especially near Christmas. My Maestro was used in this way and the police are not interested.

    From The Times:

"banks are also becoming more reluctant to pay out in fraud cases where chip-and-PIN was used. Troubleshooter has won refunds for fraud victims in cases where NatWest, Abbey and Lloyds TSB had all refused or delayed their offers of compensation, then backtracked after further investigation"

Made in China is a Security Risk:

"The recent publication of a Chinese scam where thousands of Credit Card swiping machines supplied from China to UK to be used at Merchant locations were found to have been tampered and inserted with a malicious chip to siphon off credit card data to China. This resulted in thousands of credit card customers losing money due to fraudulent withdrawals arising out of cloned cards.

Swedish Police Warn of Tampered Credit Card Terminals:

"One terminal was found to be equipped with a bogus keyboard overlay that could record PINs as well as details on the card's magnetic stripe."

Comment: It the industry can't keep your PIN secret then how can they hold victims liablie for 'alleged' PIN misuse - without absolut proof?

Tip: Don't chance it. Get yourself Chip & Signature Credit Cards.

Will shops actually accept signature credit cards anymore?

Yes every single card I have which has a VISA or MASTERCARD Logo is Chip & Signature.

Chip & Signature Cards work thus:

Insert card into card reader - Chip verifies the card is genuine.

A transaction slip is then produced for you to sign.

(No PIN = No liability for 'alleged PIN misuse).
