There's a news story about the new APACS data out ( http://www.credit-card-comparison-online.co.uk/news/credit-card-fraud-increase.html ).

It says in the story above - and apparently according to APACS data - that chip and PIN fraud is actually down on last year.

The only rises in fraud have been from overseas (counterfeiting & copying), Internet and any Card Not Present fraud where the chip and PIN is not needed.

"A man is threatening to take Tesco to court for discrimination after twice being refused the right to pay using his credit card with a signature."

Very surprised that James hasn't posted this already - he must be on holiday!

This morning in Mr T's I had to sign as the pinpad was not working. I cannot believe that their system cannot recognise a sig card, where I work it does it automatically.

But the amount of people that get out a little notebook, piece of paper or their phone when it comes to putting in their pin really amazes me

The following is from the Telegraph’s article Chip and pin scam ‘has netted millions from British shoppers’.
Dr Joel Brenner, the US National Counterintelligence Executive, warned that hundreds of chip and pin machines in stores and supermarkets across Europe have been tampered with to allow details of shoppers’ credit card accounts to be relayed to overseas fraudsters.

[He] said: “Previously only a nation state’s intelligence service would have been capable of pulling off this type of operation. It’s scary.”

I thought I better post this, in case James is still away on holiday. :)

One day after the previous Post this Sunday Times article came out

Fraudsters' bugs transmit credit card details to Pakistan - Sunday Times

Since the alleged scam involves acquiring the actual PIN numbers, yet chip'n'pin cards are supposedly un-clonable, even after you read above article these still seems to be some important info being withheld from the public

There is no suggestion that the chip has been cloned. A well executed scam indeed, but the fraud relies on using the captured details to make magstripe cards or card not present transactions.

  • I have a visa card with Cahoot. Recently I attempted to book an air fare but the airline told me that the transaction was dis-allowed. On checking with cahoot I was told that there was a limit to how much I may charge, I found this strange, my card was clear and the required amount was nowhere near the card limit. They had to give special approval on a particular day for the charge to be approved.
Lately I planned a trip tp Australia and naturally considered paying the hotel bill on departure by visa. After the last episode with cahoot I thought it wiser to check. This is a quote from their e mail to me.
"You will not be able to use your card in restaurants, hotels or shops"
They say because USA & Australia are not chip & pin the transaction will not be accepted.
Are all credit cards faced with these terms? What on earth do we have credit cards for?
