  • I've never wanted or needed to apply for a credit card in my life. however my fiance and I are planning to buy a flat in the next 6-12 months and realise that I'm going to need to improove my credit (apparently never owing money is a bad thing).
My question is what's the best and safest way to build up credit, are credit cards used as a supplement to debit cards and if you are in credit on your credit card do you earn interest? I know I sound a bit thick but honestly don't have a clue about these things!!
  • I'm not a big fan of chip and pin especially if I forget my password and it locks me out. Dead embarassing if you're at the checkout in Tesco

I had a strange experience last night in a Co-op supermarket, went to pay at the self check out with my chip and pin credit card, with the chip end in the reader said error, swipe instead, so I did, printed out something to sign, self check out lad comes over takes the signature print out(their copy) and says not to worry, no signature required sometimes the machines just do that, he doesn't know why.
So, my shopping payment will be taken without a pin or signature.
    I find this worrying!
So all you need to do is damage the chip or block it from being read in a co-op store so no pin is required?? You don't even need to fake a signature.
    Who is at fault here?

I've got a Halifax debit card at the moment. I have never had a credit card as I just don't understand them and I haven't really needed one. When this starts will I get charged interest n things just like a credit card?

I forgot to say its a Halifax Switch card but I know I had some letter about it would be changing to that chip n pin thing so will it be a credit card then?

    I have a similar concern

The retailer is liable if they do not follow correct procedures.

If the Chip&PIN machine is out of order, then they must take an imprint of the card and verify the signature. If they do not do this, then they are held accountable for any unauthorised payment.

hat type of account is it?

Halifax do not give credit interest or charge debit interest on current accounts (though they do have a daily charge system in place).
