hi there as a retailer i notice it takes away the oppurtunity for me to spot some frauds ie a man using a ladys card or the other way around .customer inserts card enters pin removes card. in the past i have had to refuse to accept on these grounds.

It may be against the Ts&Cs of the account, but it's more likely to be hubby using wifey's card (or vice-versa) than fraud.

a quick look on some french websites indicates it should be ok, hopefully someone whos been there more recently can tell us. Last time I was in France I had no need to use cards so i can only go by the rather technical French business websites i just saw.

I have a friend visiting in October. His credit cards have no chip and Pin facility as Americans just swipe and go or swipe and sign.

Will hew have problems using the card here if he can sign only?

    Hiya,

No he will be ok to use his cards here as he can swipe them instead. He may get asked to prove ID, much like what we have to do if we visit countries abroad.

Agree with above post, unfortuntely this now pushes the trend to complete different types of fraud.

You may also be interested to know that a lot of foreign cards (cards issued by overseas banks) are being compromised and then used over here in the UK. These cards tend to be from countries that do not issue chip enabled cards and their banks sytems do not find the cross border transactions as out of character as the mag stripe on the back of the card would be read anyway.

Over here in the UK, most banks have turned off fall back. Fallback is basically when the card is used at the till, the till expects to read the chip but can't and fallback to mag stripe. The UK banks systems will then question why is the chip being read. Most banks have turned this off and will decline fallback transactions. This cuts out the use of counterfeit cards.

I take it thats only in the UK. Our cards still work in the US for example. Or does that rule only apply if the machine supports C&P in the first place?

    Latest from Rip Off Britain.

Victims of PIN based fraud are still being blamed for being negligent with their PIN. These vicitims are still picking up the cost of fraud.

Rip Off Britain covered this last night (15 Feb 2012)
