Does anyone know of a work around for the problem of paying for fuel at gas stations in the USA with UK credit cards on automatic fuel pumps? At one time this was easy to do, now you are requested for a ZIP code to enter similar to using a pin code here in the UK. However if you are a visitor to the USA you obviously don't have a ZIP code so how do you get around this problem other than paying by cash all the time which defeats the point of having a credit card which ironically was first used in the USA?

When I've been in stores over there, and say I am from England, they usually put 99999 in the till. Try that.

  • If you tell them you're from the UK - they can use their own zip code, the garage that is, it doesn't seem to affect the transaction.

  • Having spent crimbo in tenerife I purchased a camera from one of the local shops.I paid with visa with chip and pin.I have since recieved an additional cost of £250 for something I have not purchased. My credit card company says there is nothing I can do because it was chip and pin.My mother in law also bought something from the same shop and has recieved an additional cost of £500.Please warn people that chip and pin is not secure and they could be paying for something that they have not purchased:(

Ouch, Did they split up over 2 transactions or just add the amount to the total?

Newsnight investigates new flaws in chip & pin

Most of us do not think twice about paying for something in a high street shop by keying in our pin. It is easy, fast and in most cases it works.
But scratch a little under the surface and there are persistent reports of people who say they have been the subject of fraud of one kind or another on their credit or debit card.
Now a team of computer scientists at Cambridge University has found a flaw in chip and pin so serious they think it shows that the whole system needs a re-write.
Over the past few years, the Cambridge team has uncovered a series of weaknesses in the system, which has been running since 2004.
