. I've not been a victim of any fraud. I use my Chip & Pin cards safe in the knowledge that if they are stolen no one will be able to use them as they will not know my pin.

Chip & Pin has reduced customer present card fraud and the vast majority of people successfully protect their pins.

There is no going back now, Chip & Pin is here to stay.

You'd like to think that nobody else knows your PIN. But can you be sure you've never used an ATM or Chip & PIN device that someone has tampered with in order to covertly recover your PIN and card details?

Then what happens if and when someone does acquire your PIN (by hook or by crook) and your card, then uses it before you report it lost or stolen?

This recent case from the Times highlights the trouble you could be in.

Every card I have with a Visa or MasterCard logo is Chip & Signature.

    Why?

If the card industry can't guarantee they can keep your PINs safe how, based on proabability can they possibly hold a cardholder responsible for a loss to fraud?

If I haven't don't use PIN's even if my card is cloned, crooks can't use the clone to make a cash withdrawal (at home or overseas).

I can't be held liable for the security of something I don't have - a PIN.

    I rest my case.
  • :confused:hi sorry im new to this and have not used this before, i need help! Does anyone know if you can cancel a purchased after it has gone through. I purchased a mobile phone from ORANGE online and it kept saying that the address on the card had to match the address to be delivered. even though they were it kept saying their was a problem. I tried this 4 times before requesting a call back from them. The problem is ive just been to bank and they have taken for 4 phones. Can i ring them tomorrow and cancel the 3 others and have a full refund??????
  • Yes you should be able to. Contact Orange and let them know and they should refund. If you made the purchase via credit card then you are protected.

... and here's a link to the raw figures that show since Chip and Pin was introduced - the fraud it was intended to combat is over 50% lower (even after a rise last year) since 2004. And that the main growth area remains customer not present fraud which was doubled since C&P was brought in in 2004.

i think chip and pin is great
  • Hi Guys & Girls,

I have just had a KFC from my local store and I paid for this via Chip & Pin. I saw the person infront of me paid by Chip & Pin also... The person behind the till didn't give him his receipt after he had paid and then he walked out of the store without his receipt. I was then served and the same thing happened to me, but yet I saw the person throw the receipts into the bin.

I asked to speak to someone in charge about the situation and was then told that they did not have any systems in place to deal with Chip & Pin receipts. I was asked if I wanted my receipt back which I replied that yes I would. I was then given the person's before receipt.

Should I report this to any regulatory bodys or my bank etc? As I just don't think that this is really acceptable in the current fraud climate that we are experiencing?

    Awaiting your thoughts
    Many Thanks,
    Snapster

I wouldn't know who to bring it up with, but yeah, be careful of stuff like that! Always ask for the receipt, and always hang onto it for a bit before binning it. Fraud affects all of us! A not too wealthy friend of mine recently had fraud perpetrated on his acct, he assumes its from a shop that didn't destroy his receipt that he forgot to pick up. Constant vigilence is the only way to win I think.

I protect myself simply by putting my left hand over my right when entering my pin.

'I believe that the fraudster must have seen me enter my PIN and then taken the card.'
