On my local group you can only post one wanted as per month and it is enforced. I think you may even have to have had posts offering stuff first too but not sure on that last point.

I am not disputing there are alot of greedy, grabby posts but perhaps some of the spleen needs to be vented at the Group Moderators.
I think this rule makes a lot of sense (or at least limit it to two or three a month).
It means people would think about what to ask for and only post wanteds that are likely to result in them getting what they've asked for. No point wasting your wanteds asking for stuff that you're not going to get.

Not convinced on the "offer before you ask" rule as people could just offer some real junk that no-one wants or offer something decent and then tell everyone who responds that it's been taken.
  • I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned (I have not read all of the previous 110 pages), but a lot of freecycle groups became freegle groups about 2 years ago. I think about one in four groups moved over. My local group was one of them and we were all moved with them. Another freecycle group was set set up to take its place, which I re-joined about a year ago. The freegle group works in the way you would expect about 50:50 with offers and wanted. The freecycle group appears to be totally unregulated. I would say at least 75% is wanted ads and they ask for everything and anything. I would say at least another 10% is totally inappropriate, cars and animals for sale, scrap dealers, 'I've just started a business doing XYZ', 'I'd like to tell you a wonderful way to get a free iphone' and my all-time favourite 'Wanted sex, lots of lovely sex'.

The freecycle group asks for moderators every so often and I have volunteered, but never received a reply. I would like to put it back to how it was a few years ago, as it seems to have fallen in to disrepute at it puts people off, which I think is a real shame as it is such a good idea. Actually, this has just inspired me to follow up my moderator application.

My message offering something: "Please state when you could collect in your reply".

Most people fail to do this (because that's clearly asking too much) but one person states:
    "I could collect anytime tomorrow"

I offer him the item saying "Could you collect tomorrow evening? How about 6pm?"

His reply: "I can collect between 4-5pm".

(can't find the smiley for banging my head against wall repeatedly)

The same happened in our area, the Freecycle group too just seems a long list of wanteds and inappropriate posts - a lot are actually selling. Freegle is a lot better but it is very quiet now, and can be days before new posts are added. I would offer to mod, but I am expecting a baby shortly and I already moderate on another forum and there are only so many hours in the day

Wish ours would do that - they claim to - but in reality we get people taken off moderation for offering one slightly used teabag and then posting the same wanted every single chuffing day - or a shopping list of 'em!

    greedy people on this site!
full of takers that ask for way too much.

i guess you don't get if you don't ask..
  • I got 49 emails through from freecycle this morning and 30 of them were wanted :eek:
Some were reasonable but others were ridiculous. There was 2 from the same person, one asking for a laptop must be good condition and not too old. His other was ipod must be good condition and would prefer 16gb!!

She probably received the daily digest of emails so the whole groups messages come through in one email. Mine is set up that way.
