Classic, she wants to get fit, but only if the juicer matches her decor....
    Totally reasonable.

Lets suppose someone in her local group have a yellow juicer to give away but no-one wants to get rid of a red one.
    What does she do...

    A. Asks for any colour juicer and goes and collects the yellow one. Three months down the line she's fed up with it because it doesn't match her colourscheme and she gets rid of it and buys a new one.

    B. She goes out and buys a red one and the yellow one eventually goes to someone who wants a yellow one / doesn't care what colour juicer they have.

To me, B is a better option.

But if someone had a red one to get rid of then she could have had that and kept it out of landfill.

    Or alternatively:

A: if she really does want to get healthy she'll stop worrying about what bloody colour something someone is giving her for free is and accept it with good grace.

B: if she wants to be picky she can buy herself a red one and the one that is yellow can go to someone deserving.

Your option B is exactly the same as mine.

As for your option A, why should she have to accept something that doesn't go with her colourscheme? Do you have matching items in your house? Are they matching by chance, or did you choose them? Assuming you've chosen some of your things, why is this woman not allowed to do the same?

If I wanted matching items I bought them, of course she's allowed the same and if she wants matching then I'm sure she knows her way to Comet.

The phrase "Beggars can't be choosers" fits well here.

Which is what I presume this woman will do if no-one has a red one to offer her. I don't see what the problem with that is.

    I find that quite offensive.
I presume that as you are on this thread that you use freegle / freecycle. Do you consider yourself a beggar? Is that how you view people who come and pick up stuff that you're giving away?

It's never been about begging. It's been about keeping things out of landfill. Which is what this woman was trying to do!

Are you really saying that it would be better for this woman to go out and buy a red juicer and a week later for someone on her group to throw one out?

Oh dear God you are taking this thread far, far to seriously mate. It's a tongue in cheek look at the things people post on freecycle. If you want to debate the ethics and whys and wherefores this isnt the place.

    In need of:Sky+HD box
i need a ps3 because everyone else has it but not me i want it in a good condition
  • Why is it that people on here don't GET freecycle is about stopping stuff being sent to landfill and not about scrounging? It's a play on the word REcycle, just as frEEgle is a play on frUgal

It's too long to put "if you are planning to send a working washing machine to landfill because you haven't got time, space or capability to advertise it for sale or friends who could use it and would rather see it used than landfilled please let me know as I am planning to buy one when I can afford it/have the time/can waste hours choosing one on the internet/getting my credit card cloned and a days waiting for some overpriced elctrical chain to mess me around over delivery".

My colleague gets genuinely distressed at the thought of stuff going into landfill and even takes out of the bin some of the stuff I put in, and takes it to the charity shop
You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow

i totally agree with pulliptears if you are wanting something i dont believe you should be specific in colour if i want something i dont care what the colour is as long as it is serviceable. If i wanted a washing machine - wth does the colour matter a silver machine wont wash the clothes any quicker or better than a white one. If you want something for free then accept what is on offer whatever the colour. As pulliptears said if you want specific colour get to comet and buy one.

there is a woman who lives down the road from me lives in a very expensive 5 bed bungalow, been renovated and every thing i post on freecycle and i mean everything she requests now i know she lives near and could do quick pick up if i really wanted to get rid of it but come off it i like to share it about a bit. Someone else might request it that has had not much luck in getting anything else that they request. I have now begun to ignore this woman, through greed as she cant have a use for everything i dont want.
However looks as if she has changed her log on details as low and behold this week i listed something and it was her again. She literally lives in the next road but still feels the need to drive to my house to collect a small item that is carried by hand.
