Sharp used to make the best lcd's but they represent pretty poor value these days. Top lcd brands are sony, panasonic, toshiba, samsung. In that order in my opinion, but others may differ.

Hi all, a newbie! here anyway ;)

I must take issue with the Sharp comment, sorry but I recently opted for a 32" Sharp Aquos over the 40" aldi offering, not seen the Tevion 40" yet but must say I'm very happy to have plumpted for the smaller Sharp (haha it's not THAT small) the Sharp is a quality LCD TV in every respect, built in digital tuner and many 'toys' to keep the boys (& of course, ladies) happy, excellent black levels and stunning quality via the Tevion hdmi player, (even more stunning via BBC HD from the PC).......it cost me £594 brand new online (although they have put the prices up £30 I note - crampton & moore tv ltd).......I'd call that excellent value any day.

    Sharp !

Just you wait until it goes wrong.

They are not called Sharp for nothing!

You will be saying ouch !

My preference would be LG and Panasonic for picture quality.
  • I have to say I haven’t had much to do with Sharp LCDs.

I think Sony are the best LCDs the V series are fantastic, but very over priced and still only 1 HDMI (not 1.3 or 1080p)!!!!!!!!

Big Panasonic fan and new Toshiba is v good to.

For a 32” LCD of very good quality I would suggest you pay around £700.

What does everyone think the ideal panel size is for the average size front room?

I think big screens in small rooms looks very chavy.

don't want to bang on about Sharp LCDs ona Aldi thread, but saying pay £700 of a 32" isn't the best advice I've ever heard - the RRP of mine is £899 on the Sharp website, £850 at my local TV shop in the town, around £800 in the retail parks and lower on a couple of websites I've seen, we are all trying to save money so don't think I did too bad with paying under £600 for this model, which does have excellent reviews I might add! If it goes wrong then I'll just pick up the phone. I would have loved a Panasonic but not in my buget neither is Sony or indeed the Aldi offer.

Keep in mind when thinking of size that Panasonic which is one of the biggest names in TVs in the world has so far not produced an LCD larger than 37" claiming that the quality at these sizes is still unacceptable by their measures.

In other words if you are thinking larger than 37" then think plasma if you believe Panasonic know what they are talking about.

As I said the best LCD I have seen was a Panasonic 70". TBF it was on HD but even a small portion of the 70" picture was pin sharp.
    Nice to save.

Lol, i'm with you there mate!

I think walking into someone's living room and seeing some over-sized and over-baring TV dominating the room speaks volumes in all the wrong ways.

We've currently got a 28" CRT. Yes, we could've gone a lot bigger but I didn't want to. A: Because I don't like the sitting at the front row of the cinema feeling and B: Coz it does look chavy and tacky (IMHO) from an overall aesthetic point of view.

I would say for me a 32" gives all the picture size I need, without making the room look like a chav showroom and it also enables you to get a decent brand and keep some money in your pocket.

Hi everyone! Am finding this thread quite interesting now as I'm hopefully going to be buying 32"/37" LCD TV soonish.

So many brands, models, specs and price differences!

No one has mentioned or expressed an opinion of the Hyundai LCD TVs eg the Q321 etc. Very good reviews and superb prices (approx £599 for 32") so, those in the know, what d'ya reckon?
I'm NOT political so DON'T correct me!
  • So now we are chatting about size of TV for size of room, my house has a 22ft front room open plan straight into a dining room, its not size of room its which way the telly is pointing! Its only about 10ft down and pointing back up the room so the 28" is fine. New house though has an even bigger room and the telly will be pointing down the room allowing me to see it from both the dining room and the study (very open plan). Do you think 40" will be about right?

Aldi did take my name and number to let me know if more came in, if not I will find one elsewhere. Warranty was a little short anyway, if I buy from JL I would get 5 years, ditto if I pay on my credit card. So basically the only place I would buy and get a shorter warranty was Aldi.

...and if you believe what Sony ACTUALLY say you should only consider a plasma for home cinema and not general tv watching regardless of size.

Sony and Toshiba make LCD's up to 46/47". The Sony X series is currently the best available by a long way but is for real fanatics only. The Sony V series is the next best and pretty good value.

As for screen size, http://www.dtvcity.com/lcdtv/lcdscreensize.html is great for working out what is the ideal size for your room.

Naturally I'd hope the Sharp mentioned is better that the Tevion in terms of picture quality but may lose out on value.
If people are after quality I'd recommend Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer. If people are after a good Telly but also good value, I'd recommend Toshiba and Samsung. Brands like Tevion etc represent excellent value, but the picture quality, though not poor, are not as good as the other mentioned brands.

    Hope that helps some people.
