Sounds like a genuine deal then. Shame there aren't any left!
  • Hi im a newbe here, as a regular shopper at aldi every week i of course saw the 40" lcd was coming in, and thought i will pop down straight after work and get one, i had searched around and made comparisons and saw that it was a very good deal. I didnt think for a minute that they would sell out especially as the plasmas are still in my local store. I even travelled to other stores in wales to find that they had all gone. It wasnt untill i found this forum that i realised that how few sets aldi had coming in, if i had know before i would of taken the day off to get one. I just feel really cheated i know its a first come first served policy but its unfair to those of us that work in the day and cant get away, my main upset is how many of the people who went first thing in the morning are regular shoppers at aldi, id say very few, i spend at least £200 every month so perhaps introducing some sort of loyaity membership card would be an idea so us regulars get first pick. Sorry to go on but i even got my room ready for the lcd, im now back using my 19" tv. I went down to my local aldi today and gave the checkout girl my details in case if any more come in but to be honest im not holding my breath.
  • It is very unfair sometimes on those of us who have to work. Some of us can't take time off to go and bag a bargain - only suggestion is to get someone else to go for you. My big Aldi buys are usually done by Mum who will get down there at "sparrows fart" to secure the item. Missed this one though as she was halfway to Bornemouth for a funeral.

Got my name down for if any more come in, but not holding my breath. But I really need a bigger telly for my new house!

  • If you want to buy a bargain 40 inch LCD good luck to you.

I would only buy an LCD for two reasons:

    1) My room is extremely bright

    2) If I used it for a PC monitor

Don't get me wrong, the Sony Bravias LCDs Ive seen are pretty decent, but it depends on your needs.

LCDs aren't very good at blacks (this is due to LCD technology) and show up artifacts a lot more on sources like Sky/Telewest (especially low bitrate channels) Also I like to watch football (and other fast moving material), without watching the "bullet time" trial left behind.

Yes, Im a plasma owner. No I have never had any problem with image retention. Yes, I enjoy natural tones and deep blacks on my movies. And on a seperate note the only gas you need to worry about is the stuff that comes out of the LCD fanboys a*ses.

On the HDMI note; all versions will be backwards compatible, and the person who said version 1.0 couldn't carry 1080p is talking B*****ks. Pointless talking about that even as most people here won't even have 1080p displays for years.
You'll have to worry about v1.3 is if you plan to be making use of Dolby True HD audio, which even the latest bluray players don't even support yet. (we'll have to wait and see for definite with the PS3 release)

I wasn't particularly interested in this at £849 so didn't even go to see if they had any on the 7th in my nearest store that is only about a 5 minute walk from home. But I know the staff quite well so when I was in there earlier today I asked if there had been much of a "bun-fight" over them and if there had been a long queue outside when they opened.
You might be very surprised by the answer.

Nobody was outside 10 minutes before the store opened.
The store had ONLY FIVE to sell.
The 5th and final one did not sell until about 1pm.
Customers who asked about them in the afternoon were directed to another ALDI about 10 miles away and the manageress in my branch rang up the other store to check the stock before anyone made a wasted journey, and also put a temporary "reserve" on them so that it wouldn't be sold in the meantime. The other store had them in stock until at least 4pm and as far as she was aware only started with a dozen.

Your words not mine the above is B*****ks, sorry m8 you own a plasma not a LCD and you clearly dont know what you are taking about
As my post above says I bought this tv and have watch 5 football matches,F1 and a live concert on saturday night none of the above "bullet time trial" or problems with the black. like you say. The "Sony Bravias LCDs Ive seen are pretty decent" how can you jugde this set without seeing it ?

Nope, your right haven't seen it. If your happy then thats great.

Im just stating facts about LCD technology as a whole. I have bought two LCD panels for my family in the past, where it would be more suited to their room and requirements.

Remember though, that in flat panel technology, that overheads are high, and cheaper displays mean cheaper components, full stop. So its always advisable to try before you buy with any panel.

Do you think Aldi were selling these at a loss? If not, then why don't they get a reasonable amount of stock in or replenish it?

It's also an item that's far from ideal to be picked up from a non-specialist small supermarket. Surely they could offer mail order in future.

I think Aldi will get more in. These had Samsung screens, so my guess is they were a consequence of Samsung getting their production runs wrong in anticipation for the world cup. Putting them with LG tuners and badging them tevion is one way to shift their over production. I did see that 4 would fit on a palette, so I would have thought most stores had 4 or 8 from a supply point of view.

The price was good, but you can now get a 40" Sony LCD for a little of £1k, so the price differential is getting smaller every week.

For me, it was the 3 year guarantee & Samsung screen that made me queue up at 8.30 - btw I do shop at Aldi, their fruit & veg & continental meats put tescos & sainsburys to shame.

Just keep your eyes peeled for the next run, I'm sure they'll be even cheaper.
