Can you switch to a different plan with the same supplier using price comparison sites?

I'm with Scottish Power Capped Sept 08, but sites are saying Scottish Power Price Fall Nov 08 is cheapest.

Will Scottish Power change it if I phone them?

This switching isn't as easy as it looks. Almost switched from EDF to npower as three comparison websites seemed to suggest it would be better. But then I noticed I am on online v2 tariff and, after a lot of searching, found npower rates and I am much better off as I am. I wish comparison websites had an option to compare the cost per unit or whatever.

If you are with Scottish Gas then the answer is NO! They won't let you switch tariffs at all without leaving them and then rejoining them.:(
Don't know about other providers though.

  • My advice at present is avoid ukpower as I am having terrible trouble getting my £20 cashback from them after switching back in Feb - they won't even reply to my (numerous) emails!
As there is no contact phone number given I am completely helpless.
Has anyone else had problems getting their cashback? If so, how did you resolve it? (incidently the switch itself went through OK)
    Thanks v much

Do you mean Scottish Gas or Scottish Power? You don't have to move away from Scottish Gas (part of BG) to change tariffs. I don't know about Scottish Power.

    Hey Guys,

By using moneysupermarket.com you can switch tariffs with both Scottish Power and British/Scottish Gas and recieve £30 cash back for doing so.

You just need your customer reference numbers from your current supplier.

    Hello,
    can you advise me please?

I am moving to my own flat - from home.

How do I find the cheapest supplyer for electricity? Why do people seem to be giving thier usage of electricy ? Do I not just need to know the standing charge and the cost per KW/H ? ... and then sign up to the cheapest supplyer?
If this is all that has to be done what is the best comparison site to use please.

Thanking you in advance for any help you can give to a newbie in the above matter.

  • Hi all,

I initiated a switch from BG & Powergen to NPower dual fuel online sol tariff on the 22 May.
I have just taken a call today from BG saying there will be a £50 charge to leave their price protect 2010 tariff!!
I did have letters from BG in the past saying I was on a price protected tariff, but no mention of the 'get out' charge.

The thing is the bloke on the phone said my tariff was printed on my bills and available on the website, but I could find no mention of my tariff on either - after much looking!
When I did my comparisons I phoned BG twice to make sure what tariff I was on, on BOTH occasions they said just the standard tariff.
Come to think about it I never signed anything to change to the price protected 2010 thingy anyway.

Is this correct?? I am still going to switch, cos even accounting for this I will still save money - just over £80 first year (cos of blasted £50!), but then over £130 per year after!! :rotfl:

    Cheers.
    Razzler....

PS Soz if this has been covered elsewhere - had a quick look

double check savings bg fix 2010 is a decent gas rate 2.888 for the first 4572kWh then 2.012 thereafter. Npower sol 6 is 3.639 for the first 4572kWh then 2.047 thereafter. Plus what if prices go back up next year or the year after. More likely to go up in the longer term than down. Solution is possibly to go to npower for the time being for electric but double check electric only suppliers in the future. Ask BG that if you are willing to go back will they waive the charge, or more likely charge you then reimburse you upon return. Only go back for the same tariff BG standard gas is 4.266 and 2.173 for the same threshold this is what you may have been quoted against to show a saving. CHECK YOUR TARIFF ON OLD BILL THOUGH. Rates exclude VAT
