I hope that you entered previous annual kWh figures into these comparison sites and not your current annual spend.

Which way around would negtatively effect the quote - if my consumption has increased or decreased? We used current figures but they are relatively unchanged from last year. Slightly higher if anything!

Just read prices are coming down.

Gas 16.5% and electricity 6% down for Scottish Power.

Gas 10.2% down for EDF, no change for electricity.

From June. Supposed to make EDF the second cheapest for dual fuel.

Reductions are less if you don't pay by direct debit.
  • I have just switched from Scottish Power where I had duel fuel for three years and I had the 'frozen' option. They wanted a lot more a month, so I went on the site on here that was voted the best from feed back energyhelplinecashback.

After entering my yearly cost for both Electricity and Gas, the cheapest one that came up was EDF Energy and that was before the reduction announced yesterday, it was also the cheapest on another save your money site that I found on the Which Website.

My question is this, if they came out the cheapest, why was it I read on the BBC Business news yesterday that more money could be saved if switching from EDF and Scottish Power to another company?

I find this confusing to say the least, when to switching recommending websites came out with EDF Energy as the cheapest.
  • Have received details from The Utility Warehouse now including both landline and mobile phones plus broadband connection. Looks very complicated, has anyone else experience of this package ?
  • I'm considering switching gas and electricity supplier for the first time. Having read all the available info I have'nt seen any reference to cancelling direct debits from existing suppliers. Can I trust that my present supplier will discontinue debiting my account, has anyone experienced debits from previous and new suppliers. Any advice please?

The DD guarantee scheme is run by the Banks and not the Utility companies(or any other company)

To ensure that your DD ceases you should also inform your Bank that the DD should stop wef a certain date.

If anything then goes wrong it is up to the Banks to sort it out.

I'm getting really confused. I moved into my new home 6 months ago, and go my 2nd bill today. i thought seeing as I had 6 months of bills to go on, it would be easy to work out my monthly spend/kWh and therefore what would be cheaper.

Using the comparison website, if I use the kWh per year to input (worked out by taking my opening reading when I moved in and then todays, then x2), I get quite different figures than if I use the amount per month I pay.

eg I have worked out that I use 1692 kWh of gas per year. However I pay £35 per month direct debit. Electrictity 1318 kWh/yr, or £25/month

Using the comparisoon websites, they give me very different results! If I go by the kWh, it says I should only be paying around £161 total for the year. If I go by month spent in the calculations, it's £688!

Am I working out my kWh wrong? How am I supposed to work it out?! Is kWh different to my meter readings?

    Many thanks!

Electricity meters measure in kWh but gas meters measure in cubic metres or hundreds of cubic feet. Explained on your bill somewhere. Conversion done for you here.

  • We're currently with Scottish Power for our gas supply.

Having done the comparisons I'm confused as to what they are telling me. They suggest that Atlantic are among the cheapest suppliers but is this based on what I'm paying now, or what I'll be paying following the price changes in June?

When I checked on Atlantic Energys website it's price comparison seems to be based on prices as of April 1st. Also when I clicked to go through to the apply section my browser (IE 7) flagged up a security certificate warning and suggested it would be unwise to send any personal information. Why wouold that occur?
    Keep smiling,
