I was told today by Scottish Power that these comparison sites are not regulated so their figures may not be accurate. Is this true? I used my kwh figure to switch

As Scottish Power haven't reduced their prices yet, I'd expect them to be saying that right now as they're probably getting worried about the number of people switching away from them.
I'm with Scottish Power too and I'm getting fed up waiting for their price reduction - if it doesn't come soon I'm going to switch regardless of Martin's traffic light advice! (sorry Martin)

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Attempted to switch at the start of the year however 'something went wrong, and we are unable to perform the switch'.

Martin posted the 'Don't Switch' advice so I thought, I'll sit tight for a bit.

On Friday, a cheque for 15 quid turns up on my doorstep.

    Thank you very much!

I switched gas & electric in February from Scottishpower to npower using moneysupermarket. How long does it take for the cashback cheque to arrive.

  • Just turned away a British Gas employee asking me to switch. He was impressed by my knowledge of the industry (just read the article attached to this forum) and eventually agreed with me that nothing is certain price-wise until all the companies have fallen in.

I think it will pay to wait a while but British Gas is certainly looking the cheapest TODAY, they are offering 40 quid cashback if you switch with a minimum three month contract, ie. if they are not still cheap after the first quarterly bill, change again and bank the 40 quid.

The guy also told me about price-comparison sites, apparantly they "guarantee" a certain yeild of customers for the right price. Trust no man, thats what I say!

    Happy switching.

I wouldnt touch british gas with a barge pole. cheap or not! my 84 year old mum has had huge problems with them, keep sending bills for her to pay that she doesnt owe! and not letting her switch to another company! we have had loads of problems with them aswell! when we were getting quotes for a new boiler british gas came to give a quote and it was some £300 more than another company, i said sorry but i had a cheaper quote, the man got really mad and said well youve wasted my time  and stormed off out of the house. My mum in law had them fit a new boiler and gas fire and new fireplace, they took the cowling off the chimney, and refused to replace it and she was getting god knows what landing in the open type gas fire, the boiler safety valve that if the pressure gets too high it sends a hot jet of water out, that was right over her front door and the pipe wasnt turned round to face the wall, so she could have got burnt, when they fitted the fire surround, an electic socket was in the way, so the man took it off the skirting board, and when my mum in law asked him why he hadnt put it back, he said it wasnt his problem! .. I was encouraged to switch back to british gas one day when i was in safeway shopping, i just listened to what he had to say, then he said if you dont give us a meter reading we cant take you from your present supplier, i went home with the switch pack, and decided not to switch, then lo and behold they took me! I was so mad.. the man had told me a lie probably to get his commission!... a man from british gas stepped on my doorstep a while ago, i opened the door, put my hand up infront of his face and said to him to get off my property i didnt want to know what he wanted! and not to call here again!
we have had a gut full of them and no way would i entertain anything from them .. not even if they only charged me 1p a year!
Reclaimed unfair charges on 5 credit cards, £1,800 :T got all my money plus 8% interest and court costs :T chuffed to bits! cheers Martin!

Hello can anybody help me I don't have gas provider even though I have a gas supply. I keep phoning all the help lines and gas suppliers but no company has me down as their customer. I am very worried that I am going to get a whopping big bill one day. I am open to anyone's suggestions.

    Veronica:confused:

This is an unusual situation but it happens, much less so though today than 5 years ago. There are a small number of households affected by this for various reasons. The advice to put your money away is sound, as one day you'll have to pay although that could be a long long time away, so you could have a chunky amount of interest by then.

As to who is supplying you over the years ie who you will eventually get a bill from, it's likely to be British Gas if you've been in the property a number of years. If you haven't, it could be any supplier as a previous resident may have changed from BG. It may not actually be a lost meter in that case, it could simply be sheer incompetence.

If you want to get it sorted out, Transco will be able to help. Call them and tell them that you have a 'lost meter' and you don't know your MRN or supplier. BG would also be able to help, once you get through to someone with a clue and tell them that you want to speak to the 'lost meter' dept. and you have no 'meter point reference number'. (I'm assuming that you've checked already you have no MRN) Electric and gas suppliers have a small department that works on this area and once you get through to someone who knows what a lost meter is you'll be sorted. Transco is your best bet though.

I am on Price Protection 2010 for both gas and electric with British Gas. To change Suppliers I have to pay a penalty of £45 for Gas and £30 for Electric. When switching check that the figures you are given take into account the penalties (this is unlikely) you may have to pay and if not deduct your penalties to make a true comparison
  • Another BE CAREFUL:

Switching is a great idea, but be careful!

The last time Martin's "Switch Now!" flag was hauled, I checked all the options and switched from Scottish Power to Npower using MoneySupermarket. I checked all the prices very carefully, checking all the comparison sites, and also checking the sites themselves. So I went ahead.

It took 2-3 months for the switch to actually go through, and after it had, a chap from Scottish Power came to the door in March saying a lot of customers who had switched from Scottish Power to Npower were actually paying more after the switch! Naturally I was sceptical as I'd been very careful, and don't usually trust any old person at the door. But he gave me some leaflets, then I checked against the prices on my old Scottish Power bills, and checked the prices Npower had sent me, and they were indeed higher!

The bloke also said that Npower prices had recently gone down, and Scottish Power would be going down "at some point soon", which would probably make the gap bigger!

Anyway, I've actually moved out of the country now (!) so I cancelled the agreement after only being with Npower for a few days (and selling the unexpected free Npower Orbs on Ebay!). I'm not sure how this happened, I don't know if I should blame MoneySupermarket or Npower for this, but make sure you check the prices at each step!
