I think I'm too late this year.. and don't know how I would pay my bills. Outgoings of £600 a month roughly..

If you have any ideas then please let me know as I would love to get to uni as soon as I could :)

Assuming that you would be classed as an independent student ( in England) you would be eligible for the full funding package of loans, grant and bursary which would be at least 6,700 outside London and of course you could work part time and in the holidays as well.

According to UCAS there are still places available for this year, although that would depend on your existing qualifications and where you want to study.

It might end up not being the right time for you to do this but it could be worth investigating in your current situation.

For full time study on a HND I would get £6400 in grants, and fees paid for.

Am I not too late for this year though?

I guess I could get a bar job to keep me going.

Thanks for the idea, I'm def looking into it.. :)

Do you get student loans for HND courses? I rang the uni about the course and all the engineers are out, so they can't tell me whether my current qualifications are good enough.

HNDs (also Foundation Degrees) are equivalent to the first two years of a BSc and you get the same funding for either of them: Fee Loan, Maintenance Loan, Maintenance Grant and University Bursary of a minimum of 300 pa. You then study for an extra year ( sometimes a bit longer if you've done a Foundation Degree) and this is funded as well.

Let us know how you get on.

My apologies if my 2nd post came across as a little rude, it was never meant that way, I was simply trying to put across to you that JC has rules (albeit stupid ones, sometimes)

If claiming JSA is a condition of your insurance pay out, then go for it, but best to do it with your eyes open, rather than feel let down again.

Try to stay positive, get back in touch with your local uni to see what they have to say & in the meantime keep yourself busy - maybe get in touch with some of your former workmates & arrange to meet up.

Thanks Chardonnay, it probably a mix of me being upset and hard to work out how people mean things just from words.. It wasn't you that upset me, it was that numpty calling me a benefit cheat.. lol

JC does have stupid rules, but I guess it's meant to fit everybody and no exeptions.

I've contacted the Uni about the HND in Civil Engineering and will see if it's a possibility, if it is then I might have to seriously consider it..

I've got a 2nd interview at a job interview I went to yesterday. So on monday I have college, JC in my lunchbreak (because no other day was possible apparently) and then have to leave college early and go to this interview at 5pm. They know about college, so that's okay.

JC have annoyed me though. My ex-boss who had a JSA appointment after me has been told he has to sign on on a wednesday. He has nothing else to do during the week until he gets a job, but me, who could do with a lunch break on a 10 hr college day has to trek to the JC to sign on. Why couldn't they be a little more easy going on me..

Unfortunately, your signing day is allocated depending on your NI number, so it's not a case of the JC just being awkward.

Ah, okay, didn't realise that, thanks :) why don't they tell you that, would stop me thinking they were just being funny with me.. or maybe I'm just paranoid lol ..

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
