Job Center said I will have to give up college...

They said if a suitable job comes up I'll have to give up my college course that is 1 day a week.

I was fuming, I told them that if that's the case I'd cancel JSA and live off my income insurance.

I have about 7 weeks of college left this year and no way would I give it up, it's my only hope of getting a good job one day.

I am doing an ONC in civil engineering and attend college 1 day a week for 10 hrs. The fact that I can work at any other time should be enough.

Jeez... am I wrong? I already worked 40 hrs a week in retail all of the college year so far, so I'm not being unreasonable.. :o

It you are unwilling to give up college to take up employment, then you should expect your claim to be sanctioned.
    Gone ... or have I?

putting cart before the horse maybe

they said IF a job comes up
first the job has to materialise
then you have to be choesen for and interviewed
then maybe a CRB and refs etc etc
so assuming the mystical job turns up
around 5 weeks or more to start
then you could say you had a hol booked for 2 weeks
    and hey presto college finished
    63 mortgage payments to go.

That is okay with me, funnily enough I don't think I'll get JSA because of the insurance I will be getting, they couldn't say because they haven't seen an income insurance before. Fair enough.

I completely refuse to leave college though, when there are plenty of jobs I would be happy to do on the other 6 days a week.

Cheers Mark, Just really suprised me to be honest.

I thought education was encouraged, especially when I pay for it myself and one day will be working in a job that helps people everyday, roads, bridges, environment etc.

I've always worked hard, so it's a bit shocking to be told to give up my future.

  • I think this just means that in order to qualify for JSA you must be available to work - I'm sure that in reality if you got offered a job somewhere in the next 7 weeks you could try and negotiate with your future employer over working around the remaining last 7 days of college that you have (if it's only one day a week for 7 weeks)

And in reality, you need to apply for a job, wait until the closing date, get short listed, go for interview, wait while others are interviewed, get offered the job, have references checked, get employment contract agreed and signed etc etc .........I suspect you would be negotiating on less than 7 days when push comes to shove

good for you for putting education first, you shouldn't give up the course or your future:)

unfortunately the job centre try to put people in any old crappy min wage job just to help their figures. they don't care about the claimants or their futures.

Thank you, feel a little better now. I'm still a bit confused as to why they would prefer me to give it up when I am available for any other days.

I just hope I find something that will let me go college next year aswell, otherwise it's Open Uni I guess...

Redundancy sucks, my old job was so accomodating :(

    Cheers Dave,

That is the impression I got, and I'd rather sell my soul than leave college, I'm 26yrs old now and this really does feel like my last chance. Bearing in mind that to get my degree I have 7 years in total to get through. Deferring for a year just isn't a viable option really and I'm only just finishing year 1.

    you have 7 weeks left

    a suitable job comes up

    you apply

    it reaches the deadline

    you get an interview

    they see other candidates

depending on job ,you get 2nd interview

    you get the job

you give them the start date after your last day of college

all the above could take weeks, assuming a job does come up
