Job Center said I will have to give up college...

Problem is most jobs are mon-fri, so I guess I will have to go to the interview, explain about college and then they prob won't offer me to job anyhow. Seems a waste of time for me and the employer. No wonder employers don't go to the job centre first, if they did a better job to fit in people with employers it would be better.9/70lbs to lose

What do you expect?
It really isn't the job centre's fault, they cannot support you to not work during the period you are at college. You would just have to take leave in any new job you may get if they are rigid mon-fri. Lots of jobs support workers taking time to re-skill. As you only have a few weeks left it might not be a problem. You are getting het up when it hasn't even happenned yet. There is no way the job centre lets anyone claim JSA when they refuse all work for a few hours commitment a week.0 -
I really think you're getting ahead of yourself - most people don't just walk into jobs (not now, anyway) so the recruitment process is, as pointed out, likely to take weeks, by which time your course will be finished.
When I began signing on last Oct, I had just enrolled on a 1 day a week NVQ course, they asked me if I'd be prepared to give it up if a job came along & of course I said yes. My course is due to finish next month so I'd be reluctant to give it up now but it's an issue I'll deal with if it arises but not something that keeps me awake at night.
Also if you get 600 a month, I doubt you'd be entitled to income based JSA anyway, altho you may be able to apply for LHA / Council tax benefit.0 -

I'd be careful about using this tactic. The JCP can ask for feedback from employers and may sanction you if they think that you're not genuinely available for work when you have told them that you are.0 -
I'll just have to see what I can find.
I probably won't be getting JSA, I know that because of my Insurance, the job centre couldn't tell me though, only that I would get it until my insurance pays out. I have to sign on still though as they insurance requires a form to be filled in every month.
I probably am getting ahead of myself, but you have to understand that this is a big thing for me and I will not be giving up college. Yes, only 7 weeks left, so I'm clear for this year most likely, but next year I'll be starting again in September so I can't avoid this issue forever.
I expect people will allow me training yes, but not if it's not related to the role I'm doing, or if I can't work the hours on a weekend (because they are closed etc). The job market is tough and I'm well aware that I'm going to be seen less favourably that someone who can work at any time.
I'm feeling a bit better about it all, I have faith that something will come up. I'm going to try and contact civil engineering firms tomorrow and see if I can get a work placement / college day leave from one of them, it's a long shot, but it's worth a try.
Sent off about 60 job applications in 4 days, so I'm trying hard to find something.
I'm awaiting hearing about council tax and housing allowance. To be honest, if I got those then I would be in a similar position to when I was working, and then this will give me a bit of breathing space with regards to finding a suitable job.
Oldernotwise - I'll bear that in mind, thanks..

I agree that it's unfair you'd be expected to give up your course so close to the end (not that you have even had your claim processed or secured a job yet!) but you can't realisitically expect people to pay for you to attend college either. Rules are rules, if you don't like it, don't put in a claim, you could still apply for LHA / CTB without being on JSA.0

Just the sort of dishonest claim that the new govt aims to put a stop to. The OP is not available for work, so no JSA.0

I have to claim JSA for my insurance, otherwise I won't get that.
People aren't paying for me to attend college thank you ! I pay, and I work damn hard too. I am available any other 6 days in the week and really do not see the problem with getting a job around these hours.
I don't need to claim JSA, I'm only down there because I have to for my insurance.
If I expected people to 'pay for me' then I wouldn't have insured myself would I?
I have been sensible in trying to protect my income and my future. I didn't expect to get made redundant and I miss my job terribly and the people I worked with.9/70lbs to lose

What?! Have you read the thread? I have insurance thanks, I'm not a benefit cheat or dole dosser.. I have to sign on for my insurance, I'd rather not, and I'd rather work.
I've been working 40 hrs a week and doing my college for 10 hrs a week for this whole college year.
How is it dishonest? I've told them about my course, about my insurance and I'm just trying to protect my studies one day a week and get myself back into work.
What a joke.. some people have been helpful, others have been just damn rude!9/70lbs to lose

The OP is available for work 6 days a week, including evenings and nights. I'm as much against benefit fraud as anyone but this doesn't seem to come under the spirit of the legislation, particularly as no money is being claimed.
GeeGee; I can't remember what course you're doing (except it's engineering) but wouldn't going to university full time be an option for you?0
