Job Center said I will have to give up college...

I agree with Oldernotwiser. It will be easier to say that you would give up college if a suitable job comes. Not that you mean it, but it makes the JSA box ticking charade so much easier.
I was made redundant in January, and like you had income insurance. Thankfully. Now a pre-requisite of this insurance, is that you have to prove that you are signing on. For each claim you make (usually monthly), you have to collect an ABI1 (I think) form signed and stamped from the Job Centre. So you do need to carry on signing on to get this form to claim on your insurance.
And it took me a lot longer than 7 weeks to find a job. Actually, today I was offered a job to start on Monday, so now I can finally come off JSA
Also, if you're looking at retail again, they're normally very flexible with hours - esp if you say that you can definitely work one day over the weekend every weekend.
Good luck

Thanks Sammy_Girl..

I have to get the form signed by JSA yes, altho I'm still waiting for the info pack, but it's 30 days until they will pay me, so plenty of time.
Job center said I will get JSA this month until I get my first payment, was this the same for you may I ask?
Also, did you have to claim Housing benefit or council tax benefit?
I couldn't get any answers from them today as they hadn't dealt with an Income protection plan.. only the mortgage protection plans.
Retail is my only hope I think, and previously I did a day at the weekend every week to make up for the day off in the week, worked out fine..9/70lbs to lose

GeeGee - Are you claiming income based or contribution based JSA?
I claim cont based as DH is working, and so we don't claim for anything else. But I still receive my JSA every 2 weeks in addition to my income insurance, which I claim for on a monthly basis.
I'm a bit confused as to why they will only pay your JSA until your insurance kicks in and also because they have never heard of it . My insurance is used to pay my mortgage, but it comes into my bank account, not directly to the mortgage company. I think your Job Centre may be a bit confused.
If I were you, next time you go in (or call them up), clarify the issue. If your on cont based, then this should not be affected at all by your insurance, and you should be able to claim both.
I hope I've made sense!!
And I meant to say in my earlier post, that when you go to sign on, just agree with everything they say and try and be in and out as quickly as possible!!!! It's not a particularly pleasant experience and something I really won't miss. In fact I'm gong in today for hopefully the last time......will do a little dance on my way out
Good luck with the interview

Madness, your not allowed to finish college but I'm allowed to do voluntary work?
I never get bored of finding out these sometimes daft rules LOL0 -
I haven't been in continuous employment for 2 yrs, so I don't think I qualify for Contributions Based JSA, altho, they didn't clarify this. Income based JSA will depend on what they categorise my Income from Insurance to be. I get £600 a month.
I'm living on my own, privately rented accomodation. My Insurance will just about cover my bills.
They said they had dealt with mortgage protection, but not income protection. But like I said to them, mortgage protection pays your mortgage, so all I did was take out something that would pay my rent. Might take 11 days to tell me, hope I get a job before all that.
I hope I don't have to go back that many more times!
Thanks wantajob
It's mad isn't it.. lol 9/70lbs to lose

He can finish college in exactly the same way that you can do voluntary work. If you said that you couldn't take a paid job because you were volunteering, you'd be told to give it up soon enough. Being available for work and actively seeking it is a condition of claiming JSA.0 -

Exactly!
If the OP can arrange with any future employer to let them have the time off for college there is no problem.0
