Wrong wrong wrong. I've been poll clerk, then presiding officer for over 10 years (first year off!) and I've always done the count. Often its a 24 hour job but sometimes you get to leave at around 2am.

It depends where you are if you can do both. Different countys have different rules. At mine you cant do both as you have to be at the count for 10pm so you cant do both.

Where I am there is a polling station every two minutes. Driving a 5 minute drive I saw at least 5. Is this out of the ordinary or something? Im struggling to understand how there could be lines of 100 people in places, I can only assume they didnt have as many polling stations as we did?

That was the same situation were i live however each polling station has its own clientel and if your names not on that list you have to find the correct polling station. hope that makes sense

We got a flat rate for counting of £60 and it went on until 4.45am from 9.45pm - 7 hours. Grrrrrrr! It took this long because they introduced a new method of validating the number of votes in each ballot box with the poll clerks list by counting each box individually, this took three hours so we didn't even start the sorting into parties until about 1am. Shan't do this again, rubbish pay for night work.
Oh and to add insult to injury - "refreshments will be provided" turned out to be a bottle of water, there was tea and coffee but when we tried to have some we we told that it was not for us!

Any tips for signing up for the next one? For those of you who were successful, how far in advance did you put your name down to count? Also, were you a council employee? Thanks :)
