Don't forget it isn't just the count, too late now, but you can also apply to be presiding officer or poll clerk at a polling station. Hubby left half an hour ago for his polling station. You can then go straight on to do the count afterwards & get paid for both (very. very long day though!).

I am doing it tonight - done it before and it has been arranged for months - but pay is only £60 for overnight count as long as it takes!!! So don't get too excited. Perhaps the op is in London?
I did poll clerk last time and its 15-16 hours straight - no breaks, eat sarnis in room. Too long and I think it was about £100 last election. Also if you don't like the person you are with (luckily I did, he was very interesting) or the poll station itself is in a dodgy area its not good. I am amazed that you are allowed in some places to also do the count as this would make it nearly a 24 hour day?

Just got a call back from the council after being on the list:
    Results:
    Today (thursday) 9:30PM - 3:30AM paying £87.20
    Tomorrow (Friday) 2:00PM - 4:00PM paying £25.00

    sounds good to me ;)

It's over £200 for presiding officer (& if you've been a poll clerk once, you qualify to be presiding afterwards). It does say on the forms that the working time directive doesn't apply. Hubby does both & if he's not counting he's there as IT support - it was 4am when he finished last year (& he left before 6am to run his polling station).

OMG!!! Just called my local council to ask about counting votes for tonight. After being on hold for 30 mins, i finally got through. Asked if i could count the votes for tonight election or be put on a "standby list", only to be told to call back after the election, and that she needed to keep the phone line clear!! Omg!

I would love to do this! Obviously I'm a little late for today but have emailed my local council asking them to consider me for future polling days.
