Sorry, he gets an adult learners grant, not EMA. It's the same thing, but my son is older (20) and went back to college, so there was no other help for him. He ALG was the only income he has and I get nothing for him.
Bot that it matters as I don't mind keeping him.
Some people do mind though and would chuck them out

I was put out on to the streets at 16 and ended up in an homeless bed and breakfast. However even that was better than the horrendous physical, sexual, and mental abuse I suffered at "home" The only thing that made is very difficult for me was my then undiagnosed mental illness. I had to grow up very quickly, but I'd had to do that from a very young age anyhow

aged 14, my FIL left home and joined the navy as a junior rating (signing on for 13 years) in 1923 my MIL had to leave home (aged 13) to work as a kitchen maid in a "big house" in London

Imagine kids these days having to do that!Some are too soft and spoilt and would go mad if they were asked to work hard, like people had to years ago!

It's OK, was still better than home, even though the guys in the B and B kinda continued the stuff, but least it wasn't coming from family.

I agree very much with your comment thorsoak.

I have been exploring 'adolescence' and the social construction of this as a term. I have also been look at rites of passage and what the phase from childhood to adulthood really means in 21st century UK culture.

My 16 year old daughter told me on Thursday she is moving out today because she does not like me. She is moving in with a girlfriend whom I have only met once and this girl said she could move in with her. I am devastated and have told her that I do not want her to go. She has now packed her things up and has left telling me that I am the problem.

I was abandoned by Social sevices at the age of 16 in a homeless hostel, just a month past my birthday, no help to find a home, to cope with being out of care, nothing.There was meant to be a leaving care grant, housing found and some sort of easing back into society after being in care homes.
This was in 1988, I went wild for a few years till i eventually calmed myself down, so i don't think much of the states help which should have seen me at least settled, not dumped.

16 is too young.

AT least for kids leaving hte public care system there has been legislation ot support them since 2001.
