Well, I'm sorry to hear about your daughter having nits! I have/had nits
there so discusting arent they! well, what ive just been told is to put conditioner in my hair and comb through it with the nit comb every 3 days as it takes 3 days for the nits to hatch (not sure if it works but im gonna try it) aswell as saying your fat- i think and im totally sure i saw a self asteem freebie site on the freebie boards- which u could do a search for? it may help!-its worth a try. I've just done a search on google for headlice/nits and this looks quite good - http://www.population.health.wa.gov.au/Communicable/headlice_resources/school_newsletter_headlice_notices.pdf (it takes a while to load) but it says if you put conditioner if your hair (follow the instructions) for 10 days you can rid of them which may work? im not sure but its worth a try. I also found this - (how to prevent headlice)
Preventing headlice
Avoid head to head contact.
Don't share brushes, combs, hats and other items that come into contact with hair.
Discourage children from playing with each others' hair.
Tie long hair back or plait it.
Brush hair regularly.
Check the hair of everyone in the family at least once a week.
Take action if a child is scratching unusually - check their head carefully.
Another few tips are-
This may sound really stupid, but don't wash her hair. Nits hate dirty hair and love clean hair, so they should leave if her hair gets dirty.
Also change any pillows and hats, get them cleaned.
I've also been told that-
Sounds gross but this helps use some mayonaise and put all through hair like a conditioner then take some plastic wrap and wrap it around like a cap and leave on for about 10 to 15 minutes. It makes it alot easier to get out.
just abit more info-
Mayonnaise
One of the more commonly recommended non-pesticidal 'treatments' is to work mayonnaise (real, not fat-free) thoroughly into the hair all the way down to the scalp. The head is then covered with a towel or shower cap for a period anywhere from 1 hour to overnight, after which the mayonnaise is washed out of the hair. This approach is supposed to suffocate the lice. A number of reports I've received from parents indicate that where the treatment didn't actually kill the lice, it seemed to make them try to escape from the hair... they were thus easier to see and then physically remove.
One of the things to remember in this treatment is that vinegar (acetic acid) is usually a substantial component of mayonnaise and if your child has any open places on his scalp (small scratches, sores, open bite wounds from lice, etc.) the acetic acid could irritate those places. This would likely cause some burning or itching, the intensity of which would depend on how big the cut or wound was, how long the mayo was left on the head, and how much acetic acid was in the mayonnaise. It would also be important to keep the mayonnaise carefully away from the child's eyes, for the same reasons.
Some people have found it helpful to mix the mayo with some kind of hair conditioner.
The vinegar 'may' serve to loosen the bond between the nits and the hair shafts to make their subsequent removal a little easier.
Based on the input I have received about this treatment, there seems to be no strong consensus. Some parents think it works; some say it does not. In general, people who leave the mayo in their hair overnight tend to report better lice-killing effectiveness than those who only leave it in their hair for an hour or so. A complicating factor in this (and other) non-standard treatments is that people generally try this approach only after they've tried a number of other approaches without apparent success. So it's a little difficult to determine whether this particular treatment solved the problem, or whether some combination of the treatment and some of the previous approaches were actually the answer! In general, people seem to get better results from 'real' mayo than from 'fat-free' mayo0 -

Sorry cant help with the weight thing or cash shortage ( having problems there myself)
For a cheap solution to the nits thing vinegar is supposed to work stinks to high heaven but is supposed to work or if you want to spend a bit Hedrin really does work. What ever you do remember to repeat after 7 days to catch any eggs you didnt get first time. Good luck and chin up, Andrea. :j

Sorry to sound harsh but your hubby giving you handouts is really not going to help you in the long term - it will only add to the psychological guilt you probably feel - a bit of tough love might be a bit more useful. Is he good with money? i.e. who looks after the household finances? - perhaps a first step might be to sit down together and bash through all the household outgoings? Spending time together to work on it and share the responsibility for spending will give you more peace of mind and is more supportive and meaningful. Looking at the full picture will also focus the mind and highlight some immediate costs you might be able to cut out - together. Also, hope this isn't too personal, but do you have a job? working, even part time is good for the self-esteem! it gives you a sense of belonging to something, brings in some cash and takes up your time so you can't spend! Also if you could find something local you could walk to and from work which might help with the weight issue? Every journey starts with the first step - look at the steps on the mountain, not the mountain! Hope this advice helps - it is well intentioned - Good luck :0)0

Hi Triker
Am sorry to hear about your hubby and I'm sure Asda wouldn't mind you letting off a little steam just this once.
Despite your problems, I'd like to repeat others' compliments for your writing style. It's made me chuckle here at work (when I should be doing something I think!).

hope all is well - if ever you get time, get the Marian Keyes books from the library (free!!) 'under the duvet' and 'further under the duvet'.
when you read about her problems and what she overcame and what a fabulous writer she is, you may have the same sort of future - I for one love your sense of humour.
wish I could be of practical help, putting a lasagne on your doorstep and hospital taxi but am the wrong end of the country here in sunny? Kent
be strong and all the best for your hubby, hope it is easily mendable

HI Triker,
To get the milk out of a coconut -- find the 3 pale indentations in the top of the coconut (or it maybe 2 - can't remember...!) then find a screwdriver or something with a solid head to it but that shape - so technical aren't I - and then you just bash the screwdriver into the palest widest indentation holding the coconut in the best way to stop it moving and to stop you stabbing your hand etc. Once one hole is made, then make another (easier to get the milk to obey gravity and come out of the coconut then).
To crack it open this is what I did: just take a towel and wrap the coconut in it, then get a hammer and smash it. It will eventually make holes in the towel - so better be one you don't care about. Hope this helps?! Oh best of luck as well.
