I have to say I experienced this kind of service at my old address, but since I have moved to my current address (18 Months approx) we know our postman on a personal level. He is one of the friendliest and helpful posties I have ever known.

I am always tempted (one custardy might be able to answer) particularly during winter or the pouring rain, to offer him a fresh brew, but never sure if they are allowed a 5 minute breather, or whether a disposable cup of coffee or soup is allowed to be supped.

Of course he is one of those chaps who would be too polite to accept it I guess, most definately he will get a xmas card with a nice little xmas tip bonus within it every Year, just for the friendly chirpiness he offers along with the service.

you know is funny,i rarely got offered anything on duty
however i remember one time being on a crap duty in a rough area i had never covered on a scorcher of a day.
this old lady brought out this teeny tiny bottle of lemonade but it was ice cold and the most appreciated drink i think i have ever had
4 years on i still remember her address

you can offer, every postie is different.for me im more of a push on kinda person so wouldnt want to stop unless i was near the end
some are happy to have a natter and some have duties that allow the itme

however with this new 'deal' (with satan!) many posties are going ot feel the pressure more than they ever have

The exact same thing happened to me. I heard the Postman slip something through my letter box and it was a 'you were out' card for a signed letter.
I ran outside and caught the postman and said im not out at all and could i have my letter. He didn't even have it!! So i went down to the sorting office and they told me i had to wait the length of time on the card (24hrs)
I made a complaint and apparently because the postman knows im usually out during the day they didn't even bother sending it with him. This apparently is standard practice!
I was fuming and complained to Royal Mail who gave the standard 'sorry, we will look into it' reply.

Oh yes this rings a bell. Was fed up of postie sneaking red cards through as it's a pain to collect them when you work full-time.

So, got up early one morning and sat in wait behind the door and caught him red handed. Never even had the parcel with him:eek:

Funnily enough it hasn't happened again after me telling him to take a walk back to his van to get my parcel:rotfl:

    That's shocking!

I am almost always out (work long hours) however, my postie still attempts to deliver my parcels - just a couple of days ago he delivered a parcel and said "I'm surprised you're in - I usually have to take your stuff back to the office".

This used to happen at my previous address and I was fuming about it, especially catching the postie at it. But now I have to say my posties bag can be half full with the packages or small parcels we get here almost every week, anything too big n bulky a van turns up with them.

I guess its down to the depot's, some run efficiently whilst there are others in complete chaos (staff wise).

Its common sense to lock your door when your not in,no matter where you live, theres some odd folks about:eek:

It depends on where you live, many people here leave the car running whilst they nip into the shop, incidence of car theft less than ten last year, many leave doors/windows open, burgalrys last year about 12 I think, women often walk home at night in unlit areas number of rapes in last 12 years 2 and both of those where what can be classed as domestic incidents. I do beleive if you live in a community and even in a large one as ours, and that community is centered around the family and has an ethic of respect for elders and the community, then it becomes a safe place to live. From what people say on here I doubt I shall ever come back to the UK to live, my once a month shopping trip to liverpool suits me fine now.

Here's a thought. What if your postie knows that you aren't normally in through the day? My hubby's a postie and knows the hours kept by the vast majority of the houses on his walk. He knows who's normally at work and who is home through the day. If a parcel comes in for someone he knows is going to be out, he'll red card it. Is it wrong for him to do this? Why should he lug a heavy parcel around his route only to have to take it back to the sorting office? He's not being lazy, just sensible.

Yes. Because hes getting paid to attempt to deliver the post. What if the person has a day off work? This is what happened in my case.

    Lazy...

Not Royal Mail, but Parcel Force and bl***y customs!

Just had to go to the depot (7 miles away) to collect birthday present parcel from DS and GF in the US!

Because they'd put presents for the three of us in one box and a notional value of $100 VAT was charged and then a 'handling fee of £8 by parcel force! £19.73 in total!

Unfortunately, customs have the right to check. They do this at random. ITs just unlucky if you get caught but thats the rules...
  • Looks like I'm not the only one who has had this problem with lazy posties!!! I reckon they should sack any who do this...
